Noise while spinning

Probably the drum bearing has past its best by date.
Time for a new machine.

the noise is more than likely coming from the clutch as you correctly surmised that the transmission only functions the paddles. As far as the airplane sound during the spin cycle well that is a bearing issue also called the "spinner support". I would be very careful attempting to replace this part yourself as doing it wrong results in a very leaky washer. The clutch runs about $150 while the spinner support runs about $250 so even though the diagnosis of the tech was clearly wrong (transmissions are relatively cheap and are fairly easy to put into these machine) it still might not be worth the money. Maytag did extend warranties on clutches for very specific models but it only covered the part and not the labor so you may still wind up with an expensive bill. I hope this helped.

I would ask Washerbearings.com and see if they have a bearing and seal kit already or if they can make one up for you for the FAV6800 top loaders.

Sounds exactly the same probs I have and have been told it may be the drum bearings. Still waiting to find out if it is fixable.

If it is making a sound like a loud rumbling sound similar to a jet plane taking off, it probally due to the seal has failed causing water to leak into the bearings. The bearings begin to rust, and no longer round and the noise gets progressively louder. It can be rather expensive to fix. Get a few estimates before deciding whether it is worth fixing.

Sorry, just as you explained bad news it sound like the bearing are giving out and would req an overhaul the possibilty of an very expensive repair.

If you get a very loud noise coming from the machine, and this noise is louder when it spins faster, then it is often because of a problem with the drum bearing.

The drum bearing is bad, Check if the drum has excessive play.

To replace the part you take apart machine, undo the belt and depending on the model you may need to remove more parts.

To get a quote on repair call Maytag at the number listed on the owner manual, the machine may still be worth repairing.

make sure heavy items are evenly distributed in the barrel. if to loud , stop the machin by openning the lid and make sure the weight is evenly distributed. never just throw laundry in , place it so wieght is evenly placed around.

From another member a step by step to dump water from machine in diag mode  ""One other thing I learned for those of you who don’t want to bail out the water in the tub. If you want to have the machine drain the excess water without bailing this should work. Turn the machine off and make sure the "locked door" light goes off. Then hold the "Spin" and "Enviro Plus" buttons at the same time for 3 seconds. "00" should then show up on the display. Then hit the "Delicate" button, then the “Pre-soak” button. This should activate the pump and get all the water out. Once the water is out hit the off button. You then may want to try the Spin cycle alone. These directions can be found on the Troubleshooting Manual found folded up behind the rear panel of the machine where the main electrical circuit board is located.""

Does the washer make noise while the drum is spinning? Or, is making noise when the drain pump comes on? If the drum is spinning and making a lot of noise the rear bearings are usually bad. They cannot be removed from the drum, however. The entire outer tub shell has to be replaced, because the bearings are molded into the plastic. If it's only making noise when the drain pump comes on during the drain cycle, your drain pump may be obstructed in some way, or the pump itself could be bad. Getting inside the machine to check either component is not easy, because the door has to be removed, along with the front panel, rubber door seal, and top of the machine. Sorry, this may not be an easy fix for you. But, I hope I can lead you in the right direction. Let me know if you need further guidance.
