How can I get the OS restored to my Epson P-4000?
I had the same problem. YOu may not need to restore the OS, but just get your hard disk moving again.
You need to remove the hard disk from the epson and attach it to your pc or mac, using a caddy.
The disk has two partitions. One is Epson-System, which contains all Epson software. If this is still ok, all you need to do is get the storage partition going again. The second partition is the one that contains your data. If it is corrupted, all you need to do is re-format it (DOS-FAT 32) and name it EPSON.
Put the hard disk back into the Epson, plug it in and switch it on. (If you switch it on using the battery it will still tell you to reset). It will now put the necessary file structure back and it works.
here's a how-to on removing the hard disk. I found this on another site:
To perform the repair yourself you are going to need to remove
8x case screws (very very easy)
4x internal screws holding the unit in place (very very easy)
1x internal screw hold the battery conductor in place (very very easy)
4x screws holding the phsyical hard drive in place (very very easy)
disconnecting speaker (easy)
unplug 2 data cables (easy but be careful, lifting up latches and they drop out)
sliding out the hard drive (its all pieced togeather like a 3 stack sandwitch)
Good luck!
