My unit all of a sudden fails to read any discs. It just makes noises that sounds like something is stuck. Then gives the message that its a proper disc. Its does this with any DVD, CD, or blank DVD.

I have the same problem. I am shopping for another. DVD recorders are not reliable at all. I'd rather use VHS recorder until I can get a hard-disk recorders.

Same problem, all of a sudden it doesn't read any discs, and sounds like something is stuck, like a scratch on an old record.
I have exactly the same problem, all of a sudden would not read discs, and makes noise like something is stuck. Does anyone know if this can be fixed, and where to take it? I really like this particular recorder. Thanks, Cindy
Seems like a common problem. I just tried to use mine and it makes a series of 3 short noises like it wants to spin a disc and then says "No Read". Anyone know if there is a recall or known defect??
Yes, I have had this problem on a DMR-ES25 and the identical problem
on a DMR-ES15. I had the DMR-ES15 sent in for repair and they replaced the drive, worked great for another month, then broke with exactly the same problem. So I have had this problem 3 times with 2 units. I sent it in again for a repair, fortunately it's still under warranty. I've been using Sony DVD-R's. Oh by the way, funny thing -- DVD-RAM writing and reading still works perfectly; it's just DVD-R's that I can't write or read anymore. More precisely, I sometimes can write onto a blank DVD-R but then if I try to go and record a second program on that DVD-R, it usually fails (and makes crunching noises in so doing).
Same problem for me. Unable to read disk, says "no disk". Just makes a ka-chunk sound for about 3 times, then quits. Same for any type of disk. My unit is out of warranty, unfortunately :(. Does anyone know of a good, quick fix for this problem?
ALL of us have similar problems. The best solution... Throw the ****** away! The DVD-R drive is TOTAL ****! Panasonic knows this. It would be a great machine IF it had a better quality disc recorder. These problema are from failed motors, software and mainly failed lazers inside the disc drives. I'm on my fifth unit and have had it with these Panasonic DVD-R recorders. I'm moving on to another manufacturer.
Well, I guess I'm not alone. Mine just bombed on me during a recording this morning, it allowed me to stop the recording, even though it wasn't recording anymore; then it allowed me to eject the DVD. I get that same issue we've all experienced; grinding noises -as if it's spinning once, twice and the 3rd spin sounds heavier and just stops "No Read" error on display.
Even when there's no DVD in the tray, it still says there's one in there. I tried to find a way to reset the device, but it's no where in their User Guide until I came across this posting.
I went from a Toshiba to a Panasonic DVD Recorder and this is my 2nd Panasonic as the 1st one died too. I had an extended warranty with the store I bought it from, which only swapped my device out with another for the same price. Not sure if I still have that warranty as I cannot find my documentation.
I know standard warranties through Manufacturers are 1-yr and that right there is just stupid. If this is a Known problem, it may happen with other consumers with other recordable devices and other manufacturers.
ANYONE Know a GOOD Manufacturer?????? Not sure I want to go back to Toshiba or Panasonic now. Maybe I should have just paid for the most expensive - SONY brand. Got any suggestions??
