What is your OS? There are a couple of things to check:
The 112 year National Geographic on 32 CD-ROMs: you need a Windows OS between Win95 and NT *but it will run under XP* and Quicktime 3.0 for Windows 32-bit or higher to view the videos. The computer needs to have 32MB RAM, 70 MB free on the hard disc and a compatible VGA card. The program will ask for screen resolution: Best Fit, 640x480, 800x600, or 1024x768. If you have a higher version of Quicktime installed, use that. Do not let the installer install a Quicktime "upgrade" (it may install an older version) - read the prompt carefully. The latest version of Quicktime 7.6.8 is here: http://download.cnet.com/Apple-QuickTime/3000-2139_4-10002208.html . This is for XP-Win7. You may need to search for an older version.
If you have a newer OS, the changes in the Windows Installers may be a problem. If you have a 32-bit OS, try installing in the Compatibility mode. Right click on the installer (.exe) and choose Properties. Then use the Compatibility tab to set it to run as if on an older version of Windows. Then right click on the installer again and choose Run as Administrator. Set the compatibility for the program after it is installed. The 64-bit OS may not successfully do this due to unsigned drivers and other issues. If this doesn't work, you can install a virtual computer with an older version of Windows and the Quicktime program. If you have Win7 Pro or Ultimate, you can do this for free with Microsoft's Virtual PC and XP mode. (Download and install both packages in order then install the software to the virtual machine.) For other versions of Windows, you will need a licensed version of XP or an older version of Windows plus either Virtual PC or another virtual computer program (Parallels is one).
There is a newer version: The Complete National Geographic 121 years on DVD disc. This runs under Windows 2K SP4, WinXP SP2 or SP3, Vista or Win7 and a DVD-ROM drive. The computer needs at least a Pentium III CPU and 512 MB. This version runs with Adobe AIR (http://get.adobe.com/air/ ) This version can have installation issues due to the Adobe AIR. If you have issues and high speed broadband, get the latest installer from http://www.nationalgeographic.com/updates/products/cng120/ClickToInstall.html ; includes Adobe AIR. If you do not have high speed broadband, disconnect the computer from your internet connection (remove wire or disable the wireless option). Install from the DVD then reconnect the internet connection. Check for updates for AIR. Then enable updates for the National Geographic program if the version is v1.22 or older. Launch the program, select Preferences. Check for Updates Now > Check for Updates > Download Now.
Another option is to download and install AIR and then install from the DVD but do not let the installer do anything with AIR runtime. Watch out it is a confusing prompt.
If you got stuck do to the problem, you need to uninstall the program first.
1. Uninstall the CNG app from the Add/Remove Programs panel. The uninstaller will report a few errors along the way. Just click OK to dismiss these dialog boxes and continue the uninstall process.
2. Delete the natgeo_temp folder in your home folder.
• Vista & Win7 Users: this folder will likely be found at C:\Users\username\natgeo_temp.
• WinXP Users: this folder will likely be found at C:\Documents and Settings\username\natgeo_temp
I hope this helps.

(I'm giving solutions for both in case of a typo in the version of Nat Geo on disc.)
I just found your additional comment "a msg comes on saying "insert install disc" " even after installing Quicktime. Obviously then it's version 112 so ignore my version 121 suggestions. Since you still didn't give your OS version, it sounds like a installation compatibility issue or a corrupt file on the disc issue. The CD-ROM set has one disc that has the install program on it which tells Windows (and the program) what the program is doing and then the other discs will work without the disc.
If you have previously installed the software, I'd recommend you find the Install disc and then uninstall the program. (Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs for XP) Next reinstall the National Geographic program from the disc. If that one disc has a problem, find someone with experience in opening/extracting a CD .ISO and see if they can create a new .ISO an burn it after using a tool to fix the file. (This assumes the corruption is minor; without seeing the disc set, I can't know exactly where the problem is.)
I hope this helps.

You're welcome. Please let me know if I provide additional help after the holiday.

(I'll be around my computer when possible but I'm in the Midwest. If the power goes out again, my network will fail.)

Please clean the discs in + manner. Meaning, take a soft cloth and rub it un-down and sideways and not in circular manner we usually do. Also clean the read/write head of the CD drive. It is the shiny blue dot. try running the discs in your friends computer to make sure they are fine and not damaged.

The discs were not dirty, but did cleaning anyhow, of no help. I have downloaded the Quick program and have been very successful in playing other dvd movies , etc. When inserting the NGS disc, a msg comes on saying "insert install disc" . I am not a nerd, so do not know what is going on? Thank you for anyone trying to help me. Lucky
Hey Cindy, sounds realistic! Haven't time to do the things you have suggested, but much better than just clean the disc( first resolution)! I think this will do it, but will let you know. I am writing to thank you so much for writing back with these solutions. Will give you feedback after Turkey day! Have a good one! a gal friend in Oregon. Luck
