This is how I fixed it:
I had a similar problem. First I removed all inputs (HDTV) and an audio output. Then I unplugged the power cable from the wall and proceeded to press the power button on the top left side of the tv, for 10 seconds. Then I plugged it back in and the problem persisted. But then, I wiggled the POWER CABLE on the back of the TV itself and the blue LED turned ON! The TV is working fine now!

Sound? No the monitor does not power up at all. Normally when the box goes on (green light) the TV/monitor would power up simultaneously as a green light on the tv would come on at the same time; but nothing this time. I only unplugged the tv and reassembled my connections when this occurred. So - "no" sound and no power on monitor but power on box. Instructions on how to replace buffer boards?

Green lights on screen blank no picture no sound nothing

Check and replace damaged component/s at its back-light inverter board, or replace this board as card basis. If you wish to get some details; check the site linked here. Surf the site with patience. Pull up older posts. It will be best to replace the inverter board as card basis.

To some model sets; especially LED back-lighted types; the back-light inverter circuit will be part of the main power supply board [SMPS]. In such cases, the power supply board might need replacement. To some models sets, the back-light inverter and SMPS section circuit will be integrated at its main board itself. If so; the main board should be replaced. To some models of sets, all these section circuit will be integrated at its main board. If this is the case, you have to replace the main board.

Hitachi TV 42hdt51

Might be the digital board, which on this unit you're in luck, easy to diagnose. The digital board has a group of led lights on it D302, D303, D304, D305, D306 if when you attempt to power up and of these begin flashing or changing colors it's likely digital board needs to be replaced...
If any of this sounds to foreign get a pro on this, you can mess this unit up in the blink of an eye...
