Not showing up

My Lacie Design by F.A. Porsche, which connects to my Mac G4 desktop with OS 10.4.11, is divided into 3 partitions. They each have a name and they always used to appear upon boot up on my desk top; no longer appear; also, they do not show up in system profiler. This happened before and after unplugging shutting down then plugging back in and rebooting, they always showed up; no longer. I keep back up photos and music in that external drive.
Now I cannot find anything.

Hi Lacie Porsche 500gb. only used to back up a couple of times.. almost brand new is now not recognising on my G5 quad non intel. Error message is drive not readable.. also when plugged in it gets really really hot even tho not doing anything... I'm sure this is not right and maybe a hardware internal elctronic problem and not just a disk reading problem, unless it is trying soo hard to read disk and spinning it too fast/much. Tried other identical drives on the same power supply work fine...

Actually I have 8 of these drives and all have worked fine .... this one is the newest and least used one!

If any one has any ideas.. please tell I really need my backups off here.

Also I have tried disk utililty on mac and data rescue app and they see nothing.

    Cheers
    Steve

I have the 3TB Porsche storage. I set it up for some space for iMac and some space for Windows. I want to increase the iMac space and decrease the Windows space. How?

Unless you have a specific utility installed that allows such actions you generally cannot reallocate, take away or add sectors in a partition without total data loss. Your best bet would be to back up your data and reassign what you need. Basically rebuilding the partition tables from scratch.

I have Lacie Rikiki Go 500GB, when the first format I set it with Mac user. Now I want to use for both Mac/Window. Pls advise. Thanks

Hello,
the easiest way to allow you to share data from the same partition between MAC and PC is to format your drive as MS-DOS (FAT 32) with Disk Utility, but you will be limited to files of 4GB or smaller.
Another way to do it is to format your drive as NTFS with Windows disk manager and to install an add on on your MAC that allows you to write to NTFS partitions (without add on, you will only be able to read NTFS partitions)

Freezes up During Backups

I suggest an application called "Disk Warrior" it has always maintained high ratings among us Mac enthusiasts it has a hardware test function built into it and seems to be a little better at verify and repair functions than Disk Utilities which you can try also if you haven't yet. You may also consider trying a different firewire cable if you have one handy. Other than that a reformat should have put the disk back into an original state however the disk could have been damaged by not un-mounting it in rare mac cases. If you have the time you can also reformat the disk again although I would try the first two options first.

HP does not recognize my Lacie drive

Id recommend trying these following steps: Go to: Start - Control panel - Administrative tools - Computer management - Disk management. Here you should be able to see the 40GB hard drive. Depending on your situation you may need to create a partition, to do so right click the unallocated space and choose to create a partition. The default settings will be fine. Good luck!

External Firewire drive won't mount any more

This model appears to have a high failure rate in consumer reviews, so it may have physical damage on the disk. Only a re-format of the drive will isolate bad sectors that won't hold data. Try re-mounting your drive after a fresh re-boot of your computer. If the drive came with the manufacture's software to allow it to communicate with your computer, then try removing this software from your system and re-installing it again. This will repair a corrupt driver or I/O program. Try using the drive with a new or different firewire cable. Other users have reported this drive working again after replacing the cable. If you use Mac OS 10.2, you might not be able to initialize or partition the hard drive. This may require you to partition and format the drive on a different computer. From your brief description, it sounds as though you may need to re-format the drive before it will work again.
