Remove the back and you probably will fine a couple bulged caps that need replace on the power supply module. You can also just buy a new power supply and that should take care of your problems.
5 blinks means failed T-con AKA LCD controller board. It is the most in-expensive board in the tv and should cost you around 40$ for a replacement. It is also very easy to replace. Let me know if you want to fix it yourself so that I can give you appropriate instructions.
Yes I did. My advice is based on what the self-test diagnostic has detected. So it still holds good. Once you remove the back cover of the tv(After you unplug it from the power supply ofcourse) you will find a large metal cover at the center(which is absent in certain models. Ignore this part if its not there) which you will have to remove to be able to see the two boards at the center. The larger one is the main board and the one above that which is smaller and has two LVDS connectors going into the display which is the t-con. You will just have to unplug the 3 connectors on it including the three ribbon connectors and then detach the board from the chassis. Just put the new board in and plug in the cables. I have actually found a replacement online, but I would like you to verify this part number(LJ94-01837H)
with the one on the board
No. They are not . The replacements should be exact. Speaking of which I cannot find any references for LJ6304230B. Anything else that you can get me off the board?
The part no will usually be printed on either the board itself or on a small label on the board. But I think I should help you locate the board first. Can you please upload an image of the , back of the tv to imageshack.us, so that I can mark the board for you and you can narrow your search down to that board?
You need to get me the direct link to the image.
It looks like the board is hidden under the metal cover at the top. Please see the image. I have marked it

The sticker is the serial number then. Since the board number matches, you can go ahead and order.
Do you mean the ribbon connectors? Look for a tiny clip kind of thing. You should press there and squeeze to remove the cables. If you are talking about something else, then please get me an image so that I can see what you are referring to.
Make sure that you have not swapped the two ribbon connectors and that they are firmly in place. If the replacement you have received is functional, it should work. The self test error code(5 blinks ) clearly idicates a faulty T-con
It can't be anything else. Usually T-con failure means you have sound, but thanks to Sony's annoying self test feature, it wont even let the unit power up. It even checks the backlight inverterboard(4 blinks) and panel backlight! Not many Brands do that!
Get a part from an alternate source and if problem persists we will ignore the self-test and go for a component level diagnosis.
Well may be if you have never tested PCBs before. Component level diagnosis means testing the components on the board with a digital multimeter. If you are not sure you can handle that, then yes may be trip to a repair shop will help.

Thanks. I wasn't able to modify my original question. My TV also has no sound. Not sure if this changes your opinion of the problem.
So it will power on (green light) with no sound or picture. After 30 seconds-1 minute it will power off, then go to standy with 5 blinking lights.
It did this once before, I unplugged it for a few hours, and it worked again for months. Now it has been unplugged for about 4 days. I've tested a few times and it just goes to standby so I've left it unplugged.
Thanks, hopefully you saw my comment stating that the TV also lacks sound.
Please send instructions (for a novice) along with any suggestions for where I can find this part online.
I removed the back. The part number doesn't match. My part number is LJ6304230B.
Are T-Boards interchangeable?
I think I am looking at wrong part. There are 3 silver metal covers, one at the very top in the middle, which is where I got the part number from the covering but not the board.(thought they'd be the same).
There's also boards under a larger silver cover. Where are part numbers located?
I uploaded under Jewannat, not sure if it's viewable or if I need to share.
Okay. The image has been uploaded to imageshack.

The board number is 4046HSC4LV3.3 matches what is on the TCON link you sent me.
But the sticker reads D1837H7J13RI051534, not an exact match to the part.
The part has arrived. There are two think pieces of plastic (looks a bit like tape) connecting the old board. Not sure how to disconnect this.
I got the part switched out and it is still giving 5 standby blinks, no picture, no sound.
I'm sure it was reassembled properly. Not sure if this means a faulty board or not, but I'll send the part back. Any other suggestions? There's no noise, no static, no picture, no nothing. Greenpower button light comes on for 30 seconds, then turns off and goes to standby with 5 blinks.
I'd like to send the board back asap, do you think I should unplug the unit and try again tomorrow to see if it powers up? Everything is connected properly.
Thanks for the help, but I think I'll have to take it to a shop or buy a new one.
I have a Sony Bravia KDL40W3000 that is 3 yrs old and has no picture or sound. The powerlight comes on, then is followed by 5 blinks on standby. I've already tried replacing the TCON board, didn't have any effect at all.
Any other suggestions.
Can you tell me what the caps look like and where the power supply module is? I'm a novice.
