I have a Borletti 1102 Sewing machine.Recently whilst in use, it laboured a bit then stopped.I opened the pedal and fiddles with the 'contacts, also oiled some of the points on the machine and it started to work again for some 15 mins then stopped again.I feel the problem lies in the pedal but I cud be wrong. When I do press the pedal after 'adjusting the contacts', I need to push/coax the wheel. It works for abit then stops. Help!

SOURCE: The fabric doesn't move forward.

We need to do some examining. Remove the foot. Put the stitch length dial at the longest stitch. Turn the wheel and see if the feed dogs move about 1/4 inch. Also check to see that they rise just slightly above the needle plate. If it does these two things it will work. If the teeth don't rise above the plate, remove the needle plate and clean the lint out from between the rows of teeth. If you find a lot of tightly packed lint there this will solve your problem. Reinstall the needle plate and foot. If the feed dogs don't move about 1/4 inch, you probably have a problem which is going to require the services of a technician.

SOURCE: Wrong type of stitch/tension not working

Found a solution to my own problem.... hope this helps someone else. Make SURE the bobbin case is seated correctly! (follow the instructions carefully). Don't put the cover back on right away after you put the bobbin case in. First check and make sure it doesn't move when you turn the hand wheel.
Also, when threading the bobbin make sure the thread passes down through the tension adjusting spring of the bobbin case.

SOURCE: how to adjust the thread

Here is the user manual from which I will quote
ftp://ftp.brother.ca/ENGLISH/SEWINGMACHINE/XR31-UG.pdf
Page 19 has how to adjust the tension of the thread
There should be dial to which you can turn to adjust up or down your tension , use a piece of scrap fabric to ensure it is set at the right tension that you need ..
The upper thread tenison wheel is located on the left side of the machine above the needle ( top/front of machine shown on their diagram of the machine as #5 )

The owner's manual should have oiling instructions for the machine. If not, contact a local Bernina dealer.

Maching starts without using foot peddle

"Ghost sewing" sometimes occurs when the wires inside the foot are making contact before the pedal is even used. There is sometimes a "dial" on the bottom of the foot pedal (usually accessed through a small hole with a miniature flat bit screw driver) that can be fine tuned for responsiveness. If the dial is labeled + or -, turn the dial toward the minus to reduce the responsiveness of the pedal, (should be counterclockwise) and if it is not labeled just try quarter turns until the pedal operates as is should. If there is no adjustment, you may have to open and repair or replace the pedal.

My machine continues to run after i take my foot off the pedal.

Undo the foot control and take out the little square bit called a suppressor which you don't need these days anyway and it should be fine.

I have a singer 514. I recently got a new foot pedal. When I press the pedal The machine motor runs hard, but nothing happens without moving hand crank -- and it will stop "whenever"

Sounds like you need to open the foot control and adjust the carbon bar, you will soon see it, just undo the screw and move it away from the contact or adjust the screw in the end.

Usually pedals possess a variable rheostat controller that react with the action of your foot. If it fails to function normally, it suggests that a short circuit has occurred. Generally, that means an internal wire or contact opens up and stops all further activity as you mentioned. The best bet is to take the machine to your local sewing machine dealer for repairs.
