Ice line dry on Whirlpool S20b-rsb21

Reading your reply to another question can you offer help here please? My Whirlpool was baught as refurbished and has never made ice. I do get the repeatedy flashjing light on the infrared reciever during the optics test but I'm concerned the main water line is dry. Is this more likely to be a problem with the motor in the base of the unit than the icemaker itself? You advice would be very welcome, also is there nay way to test this?

Many thanks, Steve

First, thanks for replying. When I test the optics with door open, flap held back and the door light on I still get the 2 flashes repeatedly. I know I should have a solid light at this point but sadly no.

As to the water line, it's dry all the way from the water inlet solenoid (after the filter as I guess you know) up the back of freezer to the ice unit.

From the r92, 66 and 84 manuals I think i have understood (since posting the first question) that the solenoind will not open to allow water flow if not called to 'switch' by the ice unit. As my ice maker is parked at 2.00pm looking from freezer to fridge as mounted I guess it must be the sender/reciver combination that is at fault. Would this be your call with the additional info?

    Many thanks again. Steve

Hi Steve, sounds like you have a indoor ice maker that's cycling but you are not getting any water to fill. Your ice ejector blades should be parked the the 2:00 position. Your beam should flash 2 times with a pause repeatedly. When you hold the left side lever in the light should be on steady. You want to make sure that the inlet tube that feeds the water to the ice maker is not frozen over. You can disconnect the line in the back and blow through it to see if it's clear. Or, you can take a small baster and run hot water up the inlet tube. If that's clear, the ice maker is parked right, but still no water during a cycle then I would look at the valve. If you want you can take a cheater cord and apply 120 volts directly to the valve to see if it will fill the ice maker. Be careful when doing this because you will be working with live juice here. You don't want to light up the world. Best to get a cord and put some alligator clips on it. It it doesn't fill, then there is your problem. Let me know if I can be any more help, Catriver

Steve, you should have a steady light with the left side arm held down. If not, it sounds like the optics. The only other reason it wouldn't be on would be when the ice-maker is cycling. Catriver.

hi Most washing machine timers are digital or mechanical. The timer controls most of the operations of the washer: water level, tub filling and emptying, length of cycles, and cycle setting sequences. For this reason, any repairs to the timer should be made by a professional service person.

S20b rsb21 whirlpool

Your freezer section has a defrost system problem. A device (Timer) schedules defrosts, energizes electric heaters which melt the frost, when the temperature of the coil gets above the point where all ice is melted a thermostat opens cutting the electrical circuit for the heater(s). The defrost cycle continues until the time expires (18-22 minutes). Therefore your problem could be any one of the three elements. Timer, heater, or thermostat.

If you look on e-bay, there is a chap in the UK selling repair kits. If you are reasonably mechanically minded and handy with a soldering iron, and happy to remove components on a PCB and replace them you can fix all of your issues in about an hour. The kit costs £35 with full instructions and also you can phone him for advice. It consists of a number of capacitors (as per solution #1 plus several others). I fixed mine over the weekend and am delighted with the results, no need to pay hundreds for the the boards from whirlpool!!
