Ibm's are very difficult, when it comes to problems with the security chip. This chip's purpose is mainly for bios passwords. If you've never set a bios password then it should not take you to the security chip window. Since it is, I'm going to say the chip is malfunctioning. For this, you will need to contact IBM support.

Unlock the security chip for a ibm t 60 thinkpad

IBM-branded Thinkpad T60 laptops from Lenovo are mobile computing devices that feature a keyboard lock for data security. When the lock is enabled, pressing the keys on the keyboard does not result in input to the computer. The lock hampers attempts by an unauthorized user from gaining access to your computer and your files. Lock your Thinkpad using the Function key. The Function key used in conjunction with other keys on the keyboard expand the laptop's number of available features.

Locate the "Fn" key in the lower left corner of your Thinkpad keyboard. Locate the "F2" key in the upper left area of the keyboard. Press and hold the "Fn" key, then press the "F2" key to toggle the "Lock" feature. Release both keys. Hope this helps.

My laptop IBM Lenovo Thinkpad T60 of type:2008-AD7, S/N L3-C0670 06/07, seems to be locked at the very start when the power is turned on, it shows a lock and enquires a password from the early start. it...

Hi,

There is no default password on the T60.

If you are seeing a lock symbol then somebody has set the supervisor password. If you can't guess it (try "password", "admin", "pass", etc) then you need to find the person that set the supervisor password.

Once the supervisor password is set the T60 is very well protected and it can't be reset by removing the laptop battery or CMOS battery.

There is a way to read the password from the protection chip but this is very complicated and requires taking the laptop apart and building your own chip reader.

The instructions for doing this are are:

Hope this helps,

Forgot cmos password after cearing cmos not able to boot from harddisk. Pls assist me how to remove cmos password of ibm T60 laptop

I just helped a friend out with this exact issue on the same notebook. Here is the instructions (step by step...well 4 steps) that worked perfectly. What you are doing is using a backdoor password set up by IBM/Lenovo.

Turn on your Thinkpad T60 computer.

  • Watch for the status message "To interrupt normal startup, press the blue ThinkVantage button" to appear on the screen. The only time you have the ability to access your BIOS is while this message is on your monitor. If this message disappears, you will have to restart your T60 and try again.

  • Press the "ThinkVantage" button on your T60. From the list of options that appears, select "Start setup utility." You will be prompted to enter your BIOS password. Type "merlin" and hit "Enter" to bypass the password prompt using your backdoor password and enter your main BIOS utility.

  • Select "Security." In this window, select "Set Password." Type the new password you want to use for your BIOS. Press "Enter" to finish resetting your T60 BIOS password.

  • Hope this helps...

    Passward protected

If this is a bios password, then no. The password is embedded in the security chip on the motherboard. These chips are designed so that if you try to remove them without the specialized equipment, they ruin the board, I've tried. IBM can't even get around this password, and when you send it in, they replace the chip. It's cheaper to replace the motherboard than it is to have the chip replaced, considerably cheaper.

Now, if this is a Windows password, then you can either start the machine in safe mode, log in as administrator, and clear any passwords from the user accounts section in the control panel, or you can perform a system repair with your recovery or operating system disc.
