I have the same problem, started freezing on "ZEN", then I found the recovery mode to format and update firmware. Now it is stuck in recovery mode as the firmware won't recognize my player as being connected. Let me know if you had any help or if I have to send this piece o' poo in for repairs.

    Same exact problem

  • Anonymous Dec 06, 2008

Same problem. The zen was not being recognized and I tried everything to get the PC to recognize it, following all the advice on Creative's website without effect. Then I did the stupid thing... and tried to update the firmware. When I removed the old and tried to add the new It gave me the same problem. Since the PC could not "see" the player (but it was in explorer?!) it would give the message "player not connected". WTF? Now, no firmware can be installed. ????

SOURCE: Zen vision m firmware problem

Dear All this problem is caused if the computer has windows media player 11 installed. I googled this for days trying to fix it - & was relieved when i finally sorted it - it's very easy. Just do the following.
Use a computer that has XP (either pro or home edition) (forget about vista....). go to add/remove programs - uninstall windows medi player - on my PC it does a roll back to WMP version 9. There's also a program called "Windows media format runtime 11" which comes with WMP11 & you need to uninstall this too - otherwise it still won't recognise the player.

Then restart your PC. Then make sure you have downloaded the lastest firmware version - just google it - trying to find the right one on the creative website is not easy - their website is poor - there are quite a few other places you can download it from.

Then I clicked the "reload firmware" option in the recovery mode (I had already deleted it 4 days ago). Then when your PC has restarted plug in your Zen, it should come up something like "MTP device recognised". Now when you double click on the firmware downloaded to install - it it will recognise the player & you can click the upgrade button. It does the upgrade & puts the firmware back on the ZEN. I got a message saying "firmware upgrade failed" at the end although when I started the player - it booted up as normal & I was able to reload & play my music.

This sure beats the "send it back to John Lewis, pay 60 quid & wait 6 weeks for it to come back " option - if like mine it's out of warranty

SOURCE: zen vision m 30 g, firmware terhapus gimana

you can go to the Creative Website and download the latest firmware.
and the desktop software.
when you mount it on the computer you will be able to restore the software/firmware.

there are options in the players menu for rebuilding database and things before you restore to see if that helps.

Hi.
You tried these yet?
Reset, Format or Clean Up a Zen Vision:M

If your player stops responding, you can reset it. To reset the player, push the end of a pin-like object (for example, a pin or straightened paperclip) into the Reset hole. This should not cause you to lose any data or audio tracks, unless you were in the middle of transferring an audio track.

To reset Zen Vision:M to factory default settings:

  1. Press on the Menu/Back button on your player, and select System, and then Reset. To Format or Clean Up Zen Vision:M Detach the Zen Vision:M player from your PC , and ensure that the unit is off.If the battery is too low, charge the battery fully before continuing
  2. Slide the Power switch towards the Power icon and hold the switch in the Power On position.
  3. Push the end of a pin-like object (for example, a straightened paper clip) into the reset hole, press gently and remove.
  4. Release the Power switch when the Creative logo appears. The Recovery Mode appears: * Clean Up (Performs a disk scan on the player's hard disk, it will not affect music files)* Format All (Formats the players hard disk - Note: all contents will be lost)* Reload Firmware (Reloads the Operating System on the Zen. Select this option ONLY if there is a firmware available to reload.)* Reboot (Reboots the device)
  5. Select Clean Up or Format from the Recovery Mode, and then select Reboot

My Zen vision: M is stuck in hold. Sliding the switch does nothing except make the hold symbol blink when slid all the way to the power on/off position.

Support for Zen Vision M on this site:

Enter the word "hold" in the bar Knowledgebase Solutions.
This will give you access to various answers.
One answer could be to do a recovery:

  1. Slide the power button towards the power icon and hold it in the Power ON position
  2. While holding on to the power button, Gently push the end of a thin object (such as a pin or straightened paperclip) into the Reset hole.

The reset button for your player is located at the bottom of the player, to the left of the sync adapter port.
  3. Release the power button when the Creative logo appears.
  4. The Recovery Mode screen appears, and four menu items are shown: Clean Up, Format All, Reload Firmware and Reboot.
  5. To clean up your player's memory, select Clean Up.

  6. When the cleanup is complete, select Reboot. Your player restarts and starts rebuilding its music library.

  7. Should the above solution is unable to resolve the issue, please install the player's latest firmware. To obtain further instruction on getting the firmware reload into the player, you can refer to the following article:

Creative zen microphoto v0.0.65

If a problem is occuring with the firmware, then just go onto the CREATIVE ZEN website /www.creative.com and select the model of your creative mp3 player.. once you have selected the modell it will then scan your mp3 player to check what it is required and then reccommends the downloads listed. However it is vital that your mp3 player is connected to your pc via usb lead.

Stuck in recovery mode--would love to avoid buying a new mp3

I had the same problem as your and it stopped working yesterday. After search for helps and now it is working again after I reloaded the firmware. But unfortunately everything is gone. You have to reload your musics again. You can try this out: 1) go to creative labs website to download the "Recovery Tool". 2) at Recovery Mode of your zen there are options: Clean Up, Format All, Reload Firmware, and Reboot. Try out Clean Up first if it still not working then try to Format All. After that try the Reload Firmware. After you done the Reload Firmware. 3) Shut down your Zen and try to connect it to your computer. Now your Zen will automaticlly power On and computer will recognize it as a drive. 4) Open the Recovery Tool you have downloaded at creative labs website. This tool will detect your Zen and follow it's instructions: It works with my windows Vista. Well, it works for me, I think it will work for your too. Good Luck!
May God bless.

Recovery Mode

I agree, use the Reload Firmware tool on recovery mode and then upgrade the firmware from the website. If you get "firmware failed!", then try it from a different computer.
