The BIOS is AMI. Under ADVANCED SETUP:
The options listed for 1st,2nd ,3rd Boot device include:

IDE-0 means Pri master ?
IDE-1 means Pri slave ?
IDE-2 means Sec master ?
IDE-3 means Sec slave ?

No it won't BUT the BIOS may not support a 500 Gb hard disk, it will see it as a smaller capacity hard drive.

from what I can tell, this is a sata hdd, sata requires no master/slave settings, just plug it in and boot your machine. It should show up straight away, if it doesn't then right click on my computer and select manage, in the next window that appears select disk management. From there you should be able to see your hdd in the lower of the two panes, check to see if it has been assigned a drive letter, if not then right click on the drive and select change drive letter or path. You will then get another box, click change or add and select a letter from the drop down box, ok everything and check in "My Computer" your drive should show now

changing the bios will do the trick, find one that is most compatible with aspire 1640 for a 500gig hd, once you have this replaced, it will work.

The Motherboard will be able to handle it and XP will read the hardrive i have used a 500 gig hard drive in my old computer before it should work just fine

Is it showing the 300gig in the properties? if yes then try to copy with command mode,If again its given problem then u need to backup your data and format the drive, then try copying.I think it will work.
