You are safe. :) It may have shut off from a voltage spike or brown-out on the line. There are several fuses inside of the TV that are supposed to blow before anything catches fire. If it starts smelling again, then unplug it and take it to a service center.
Unit is telling you something is wrong with circuit. LED pilot flashes when malfunction is detected. Power supply shuts unit down to prevent further damage and/or fire. Leave off and seek pro/tech check out
