I just replaced worm wheel on my KitchenAid Stand Mixer. Power was working prior to worm wheel breakage. Mixer was running, but not spinning. Dismantled Mixer, and replaced worm wheel. Put back together to test, but now, mixer fails to turn on. Verified power going into unit when pluged in, but mixer is unresponsive when sliding power switch. What's goin" on???

there is a ring clamp on top of the main worm follower gear on the drive shaft. you might not see it due to the grease.

you need to get one of those weird little pliers with points on them to spread the ring clamp to remove it. Then the gear is just friction fit on the shaft...it's pretty tight. I carefully used a screwdriver to slowly separate the main follower gear from the lower gear and it goes up the shaft....

after a bit you can wiggle the follower gear by hand and it will come up. Then you can see there is a pin holding the drive gear underneath it in place. The pin in my mixer was actually bent (must have been some tough dough).

then you reverse the process to put the gear back on -- except that the top follower gear has to go on the pin in the right orientation or the ring clamp won't fit.

Pull the back off and there will be two screws at the top of the Speed Control Plate and a 3rd screw at the bottom. Tighten the top two screws down. [email protected]. Let me know if it works.

First off -- if it's still under warrantee, you'll want to go to kitchenaid.com and find the nearest service center. The next thing I say starts with "void the warrantee" steps. :)

It's very simple to open a stand mixer to see if you've got a simple problem or a bad one.

Unplug it.

Follow the aluminum "Kitchen Aid" band to the back of the unit, there's one main screw. Remove this, and set it aside with the band which should come right off at this point.

Now, there should be two screws on each side of the unit where the band used to be. Remove each of these. They're all identical, so no worries if you mix them up.

Now you can lift the top off of the unit and see inside. The motor is at the back of the unit, the gear box at the front is where the oil is coming from. Try (GENTLY) to tighten the screws that hold the gearbox together. With a little luck, the gearbox screws had come loose and it was oozing oil out through the seals. If they're all firm, then you've got more serious problems and you'll want to find a service center for it.
