The top bolt is fairly easy to take off.....the positive lead from your voltage regulator(has a red cap on it) that is attached to the the starter is fairly easy to remove. Both are 10 mm socket. The hard part is removing the bottom bolt on the starter.....you can't really see it without removing a few things.....very hard to get at. You can remove the clutch cover and the clutch and everything there and finally remove the back of the clutch cover....but that's a lot of work. I find it easier to remove the air box and air filter.... then you can actually see the hidden bolt on the bottom of the starter with a flash light.... it's still hard to get at....but with a few long ratchet extensions and a a flexible ratchet attachment you can get to it. Once that last bolt is removed....usually a little tap with a hammer will dislodge the starter and it will come out.
The voltage regulator is a 3"x3" box bolted to frame usually with 2 screws .. it should have a connector with 3 or 4 wires .. sometimes just removing and cleaning mounting surfaces will solve charging problems. ! Checkat battery with voltmeter ,, then start engine , voltage with engine running should be 13 + volts dc.
Hey Ben, there can be several things...there can be loose or missing engine mount bolts, a cracked frame at the mounts, or.. the engine has issues... (if its the engine itself.. its on its way to breaking...somewhere/somehow)..
... I would start with tightening the motor mount bolts...then checking the frame at the mounts...
..Checking the engine will require a professional mechanic.. maybe a loose flywheel..or loose clutch ( OR BAD BEARINGS)...this is a starting point...
Turn over is the process that an engine makes when it is trying to start. If you twist the key and get nothing then it wont turn over. Google shimming a starter and watch the vids.
Disconnect the battery and then carefully remove the starter. Take the unit to a local auto parts dealer for a bench test. Starters have two separate functions, one spins the shaft to crank the engine, the other is called a bendix, which pushes the starter gear out to engage the flywheel, and then after the engine engages, retracts it (except in the case of starter/generator combo units which recharge your battery and power your vehicle's electricals while the engine is running) Always best to get a bench test rather than depending on apparent symptoms.
Secrets of Starter Motor and Drive Replacement for 1999 Polaris Scrambler 400 4 X 4
1. Yes you must access both sides of the starter to remove it. Remove clutch covers on left side of machine and covers and pull starter cover on right side of machine.
2. There are two bolts on the clutch pulley side and two bolts under the pull start cover that must be removed to free the starter/starter drive. The starter and drive must be removed and installed from the left (clutch pulley) side together. That's different than the 500.
3. You only need to remove the positive lead from the battery and starter motor post. The starter is grounded by being bolted to frame.
4. The starter is at the bottom of the motor, not like the 500 at all which is accessed through the air box. You can find it by removing the plastic skid plate on the bottom of the engine. You can prop up two wheels on the left side so the machine is 45 degrees tipped up onto both right wheels. Make sure the fuel and oil caps are screwed in tight.
5. It is difficult, but you can remove the two bolts on the left side without removing the actual drive and driven clutches. The clutch cover must be removed though.
6. Under the pull start cover on the right side you can remove the two bolts holding the starter in. One of them is about 4" long and goes through the actual starter motor. It's tough to remove without bending because your u joint partially blocks it.
7. Now you can wiggle the starter and drive out from the left side through the slot in the frame.
8. Decision before you start: How much do I pay for parts? The range is from $50 - $150. Is the expensive part better? This is a difficult repair. Can I really do it myself? If not, what am I willing to pay for labor? I did it for $50, but if it goes out again I will try to find someone who will do the labor for $150 or less. I might go for the more expensive parts if the cheaper ones don't hold out.
1. Need a new battery
2. starter solenoid is defective
3. starter needs rebuilding...
Does Solenoid click when trying the electric starter? CAREFULLY jump the two terminals on the solenoid (SPARKS WILL FLY).. IF the engine turns over or starts, THE SOLENOID IS BAD. just replace it.
If it clicks when you are trying to start it electrically, use a multimeter (voltmeter) to see if you are getting 12v to the starter connection while you are trying to electrically start it. (+) lead on starter bolt and (-) to a motor mount bolt. If you get 12v+, starter needs rebuilding!
Solution#1 worked perfectly. It only took about 15 minutes all together. the side panel removes easily. It just slides out of the other panel. Once you have removed the handle (Shifter) and the other two bracket bolts, just place it back into the shifter housing and move it around. I was amazed at how easy this was to repair. I also turned the ignition to the on position to see if it was changing gears and it was. Solution #1 repost originally posted by Jpach I tried this today and it worked. Pull the sideplate from the ATV so
that you have access to the gear shifter assembly. Unbolt the gearshift
assembly from the mounting bracket. There are two bolts at the rear
near the two rods that exit the assembly and three on the bottom. When
the bolts are out, remove the assembly from the mounting bracket. Hold
it in your hand and move the shift lever through all of the positions.
This won't actually shift the transmission, but it should free up the
rods in the assembly. Remount the assembly with the five bolts and it
should now be able to shift out of reverse.
