Check your reversing valve, When you set your thermostat for heat the reversing valve circulates the heated freon through the air handler instead of the cooled freon. The valve is called many things but it reverses the flow of freon See http://www.google.com/images?hl=&q=heat+pump+schematic&rlz=1B3GGGL_enUS329US330&um=1&ie=UTF-8&source=univ&ei=npcOTfLEPMO88ga4poDGBQ&sa=X&oi=image_result_group&ct=title&resnum=2&ved=0CC4QsAQwAQ&biw=1024&bih=576 and look at the different schematics

You can replace the heat/ac unit with a newer one, but the savings are small as the evaporator/condenser or air handler will not off set the expense of the mechanic having to adapt the new unit to the old air handler. The problem may be in the air handler as a leak of the freon may be all that is wrong.

Intertherm inside unit icing while heating

There is no antifreeze in the system. The system is filled with liquid gas and gaseous gas. On the heating cycle, the inside coils should get hot and the outside coils should get cold. In the summer, the heat pump reverses to provide Air Conditioning, the outside coils get hot and the inside coils get cold. They shouldn't really ice up because there is a defrost cycle. You need professional service by an Intertherm technician.

Intertherm Heat Pump

Some of the old heat pumps made the reversing valve in the heating mode. On your new thermostat the orange wire will need to be on the B terminal. If it was color coded? I hope you made notes of how it was.

No AC from older Intertherm split system

It sounds like you are low on refridgerant. Double check to make sure both fans and the compressor are running. If so then you have a refridgerant problem.

My intertherm heat pump has freon but will not heat is it posible that the reversing valve is stuck in the middle and will not let it heat if so where can i get a new one.

Verify power to the reversing valve relay.
Some reversing valves energize in HEAT some in COOL.
Tap the reversing valve with a hammer handle while it is on. If it is stuck, it may come unstuck.
