Hi and welcome to FixYa!
Please try to remove the battery and let it sit for atleast 5mins. then reconnect it again. This should reset the system and can resolve the problem.
Hope this helps and thank you for using FixYa! Have a good one!
This 'solution' lacks veracity. Cameras display this fault in spite of being bereft of power. Its often caused by microscopic particles. A hard close exhilation around the dial can correct it temporarily, but a professional clean is required. The problem occurs commonly in spite of careful storage and use. A design problem.

Microscopic particles. Poor design leads to commonplace fault. Professional clean required. Blow hard around dial for temporary fix. Battery is not the problem.
Do what the message says. LOL. Turn the mode to view pictures or something.
Remove the batteries or battery from the camera and then hold down the on off button for around 60 seconds to drain any remaining power, check that your mode dial is on a normal position or move it around.
then plug back in your batteries and power on, if you still get the same error message move the mode dial again.

Try turning the mode dial again. It may not have been turned properly.
