I have two LaCie hard drives link together (firewire 800 cord) and I use a firewire 800 cord to connect the drives to the mac tower. A little spark lit the port when I was plugging the firewire 800 cord in. After that the computer didn't recognize the drives. I didn't use the cord I plugged in to the computer and tried plugging in a hard drive separately using firewire 400 cord and 400 port. Still didn't recognize the hard drive. I'm thinking maybe the spark shot the card for the firewire ports. I use my laptop and connect the hard drives. I plug them in to separate ports on the laptop (firewire 400 and 800) still NOT using the cord that sparked ealier. No luck with either computers recognizing the hard drives.
Try to connect to another computer, and see if it recognizes the drive. If Not, you can dismantle LaCie and take the disk out.
Connecto your disk to another external box (USB or Firewire) so you can have access to you data.

Hello,
First of all make sure that the USB port that you are
using to connect it to your PC is a USB 2.0 port, and
not USB 1.0.
Also if it came with an external power, connect it to
the external power before putting on your PC.
This is because the voltage supplied by USB 1.0 is
lower than that of USB 2.0 and therefore might not
be enough to power up your USB Drive.
After making sure about this, power up your system,
and plug the harddrive, then Right-Click on my
computer icon, select manage, then go to Disk
Management Option.
On the Disk management option Page you should
see ALL the drives installed on your system,
including the hidden ones, so what you will just do is,
try and locate the one representing your harddrive,
and right click on it. then select "Change Drive letter
and Paths", and give the drive any new, unique letter
(i.e alphabet) different from the ones already on your
system, and click on OK.
This should make your harddrive to be detected
automatically.
Try this out and let me know how it goes.

the problem is that your lacie drive operates using the NTFS (New Technology File System) under USB which is the standard file system of Windows. Apple mac is not interopable with native NTFS therefore you need to install a read-write NTFS file-system driver on your mac if you wish to use it via the USB connection.

download and install the software then restart your mac.

Let's not take this as a solution so much as an intuition. I believe you may have run up against a limit of physical disk space that XP can administrate.
