First of all go into messages, then settings, then email, then email accounts. you need to click on an empty account, or if you don't have any spares you can click on an existing account that you don't use and just change the settings. You will get a "Welcome to the mailbox setup wizard" message and you need to click "yes". Now enter your mailbox name - this isn't anything to do with hotmail's settings so call it what you please. I just called mine "Hotmail" ! Now click "next" and select "POP3" from the list of mailbox types. Click "next" again and enter your email address in full (????@hotmail.co.uk or hotmail.com). Now scroll down to the "User ID" field and enter your email address in full again, exactly the same as you've just done. Scroll down again and enter your password (remember that it is still case sensitive as it would be on a pc).
Now click "next" and enter "pop3.live.com" into the "POP3 server" field. Click next again and enter "smtp.live.com" into the "SMTP server" field. Click next again and you will see a "mailbox setup wizard is complete" message. Now click ok and you will see that your email account has been added to the list of accounts (numbered 1 to 5).
At this point the setup is not complete as you need to tweak some additional settings to get your phone to work with hotmail! Staying in the same menu, select the account you have just created and press "select". Scroll down to the "Incoming email server" field and select it with the raised middle key to access more settings (as opposed to clicking "save"). Your POP3 port should be "995" and you need to make sure that the "secure connection" and "secure login(APOP)" boxes are checked. Now click "save" and scroll down to the "outgoing email server" field and again select it with the middle key as opposed to clicking "save". Your SMTP port should be 465 and the "use SMTP authentication" and the "same ID and password" boxes should both be checked. Scroll down and make sure the "secure connection" and "connect to POP3 server first" boxes are also checked. Now click "save" and then click "save" again.
This should now mean your hotmail will work. There are other settings you can tweak such as the "check interval" (how often your phone automatically checks your email) and the "download limit". These can be found in menu-> messaging-> settings-> email and then either "sending options" or receiving options" depending on which options you wish to tweak :o) Also don't forget to make sure you have the correct GPRS settings from your service provider or you won't be able to make a connection to download your email!
Finally, to check your email, go to menu-> messaging-> my messages-> email inbox-> "account name" (the name of the account you have just created). From here you can press the middle raised key to check for new emails, or use the "options" to do this or create a new email :o)
I really hope this helps people, and I apologise for being long winded in my explanation, but I am all too aware of how easy it is to get "lost in translation
