A new model switch would probably work better with Windows 7 laptop. I have experienced some incompatibilities with older peripherals or accessories when upgrading to Windows 7.
Good luck on this repair.
The way you described it, it seems that this is the case. But, if you would buy a new switch and it didn't work any better, I'm sure they would take the newer one back within 30 days of purchase if it is in new and resaleable condition. Save the receipt and packaging.
Say, if you get it from Walmart, Radio Shack, or another reputable computer accessory retailer. Check with them on their return and refund policy before buying from any particular store.
If the problem still exists when bypassing the switch, then I think that gives a clue as to why you are experiencing compatibility problems.
Thanks for the rating and payment. Again, I have encountered some problems upgrading to Windows 7 on otherwise good peripherals and accessories that used to work on the older operating systems.
This is an unfortunate trait of Windows 7, but it is not without compensation as far as it being the latest and greatest operating system from Microsoft.
And, I've just look at it like it takes a little adaptation to get used to Windows 7. Luckily, most of the older things work on Windows 7, but it can be kind of disappointing to see that not 100.0% of the older input devices work with it.
Have a good new year to you.

What you have done so far are correct way to diagnosis the problem. Only thing i can suggest is to check if the OS version is windows 7 STARTER. Because any starter version (Vista/win7) has lots of limitations. And the major limitation is in the area of networking (specially LAN). If your new ACER travel mate is running a win7 starter then you are going to have lots of restriction in terms of networking.

I am puzzled why a swtich which appears to be independent of Operating System and uses no driver, would not work with Windows 7. As far as I know, D-Link does not limit the use of these switches to specified Operating Systems. I would not want to buy a newer switch only to find out that the problem that I am having, also exists with the new switch. Can you provide any explanation of why you feel sure that a newer switch would solve the problem.
OK, I will acquire an updated switch with the understanding that if it doesn't work, I'l return it. Either way, I'll get back to you and let you know what happened. We can then decide how to to proceed.
The problem is that the older KVM switch is not compatible with Windows 7. However, it turned out to be a bit more complicated. Just can't get any newer switches/ The required switch needed to have very specific specifications in order to work with Windows 7. Even some of the switches that specify that they work with Windows 7, do not work well (according to various reviews). I found a switch on the internet that was spec'd to do the job. I have installed it and it seems to work fine with all of my computers. My mouse does not work with the Windows 7 system connected through the switch, but I suspect it is the same problem and that this mouse just does not work with Windows 7. I tried connecting the mouse directly to the computer and it also didn't work.
Even though your answer was not complete, I am releasing payment to you because you confirmed what I suspected: that the older switch box was not compatible with Windows 7.
