To access the Toshiba recovery partition, power off the laptop. Hold down the 0 (zero) key and turn the laptop on. Keep holding down the zero key until the TOSHIBA logo appears, where you should start tapping the zero key repeatedly. Stop if the unit beeps or when the TOSHIBA logo disappears. The screen should flash ** HDD RECOVERY MODE ** for a split second, then load the Toshiba recovery program right from the hard drive.

Note that this erases all data, and reloads all factory default software. Be sure to back up all your important personal data beforehand!

Did you try follow my directions to use recovery partion system? (Was there a problem)
You can still try that. It is seperate from the Windows partion, unless you formated the entire hard drive, but I don't think you did, because you said format was real quick.
It's likely that the hard drive is a SATA drive, for which XP has no native drivers. Therefore does not see them. (Says No Hard Drive). You MAY be able to change hard drive to IDE mode in BIOS, then you will be able to load XP. IF THE BIOS supports it. Tap F1 key when starting up, before windows shows anything to enter BIOS.

I have not problem entering BIOS (F2) or Boot Manager (F12).
    In BIOS i changed starting through CD ROM;
Through boot manager I have been able to boot from CD with the Windows Vista Home Basic. It goes good through all phases (i.e. disc partition 2/ format/ copying Windows Files/ expanding/ installing features/installing updates/ and it seems to stop in the last stage, namely "Completing installation"; after some 15-20 minutes of "completing installation" the monitor becomes dark and noithing else happend..

  • pjorgji534 Feb 21, 2011

I have tried several times by pressing "0" or other suggestions(F8) but it did not bring me far. The dialogue box requested the recovery discs which I did not have :(

I did a lot of checking on this one. This is direct from the user manual for your model.
Hard Disk Drive Recovery using the recovery partition

To recover your hard disk drive using the utilities stored on your
    computer’s HDD:
1 Make sure the computer is turned off.
2 Press and hold the 0 (zero) key on your keyboard while
powering on the computer. When the computer powers on, the
    Toshiba Recovery Wizard screen displays.
    Toshiba Recovery Wizard screen
3 Select one of the options, and then click Next. The options are:
? Recovery of Factory Default Software
    ? Erase the hard disk
Choose Recovery of Factory Default Software
    Follow Prompts.
IF THIS DOES NOT WORK, YOU HAVE MANAGED TO DELETE OR DAMAGE THE HIDDEN PARTION HOLDING THE RECOVERY UTILITES AND LOAD PACKAGE.
YOU WILL NEED TO ORDER REAL RECOVERY DISKS FROM TOSHIBA FOR YOUR MODEL TO RELOAD.
You will need the serial number to order.. Will cost you $25 for S

    Thank you Narseman,
I have tried the suggested procedure several times, but without success, even before I tried to reinstall the Windows Vista with recovery CD. However, I have been able to acces the Systenm Recovery options menu, offering choices betw Startup repair, system restore, windows complete restore, windows memory diagnoostic tool and Command Prompt.

The Windows Complete Restore did not work, as it did not find any back up in my PC.( I tried to create one back in December, but without success.)
The system restore doesn't work either ...

BUT I wonder why it doesn't work with the recover CD ... Maybe I should DELETE the Partition instead of FORMATTiING it?

  • Narseman Feb 21, 2011

It sounds like you have some damage there. The System restore should have done it.
Though it sounds like you're missing an option.. I thought you should have an option to Factory Default! Anyway. Even if the HDD is damaged and you replace it, OR NOT, it seems you only option is Toshiba OEM restore DVD. These are free except for the Shp

I called Toshiba tech support and they told me that my computer has been delivered WIT RECOVERY CD-s (which I don't have) and that it would not work with the the recovery CD of other PC Desktops types, such as DELL or any other one. Therefore, I ordered a new recovery CD from them.

  • pjorgji534 Feb 21, 2011

While I wait for the Order, I would liketo thank you very much for your kind advice Narseman.

If you're speaking of windows, then you have to reinstall it. Insert your restore discs, and boot to the CD. Follow the prompts on the installer.

If you're talking about BIOS settings, you can enter your bios by pressing F1 on boot OR:

1. Turn on computer by Holding down power button while pressing the ESC key.
The machine will beep, then display:
Check System, then press [F1] key.
2. Release ESC key
3. Press F1 key

I have a Toshiba Satellite A305-S6829 running Windows Vista Home Premium.
I tried to reinstall windows with a reinstallation DVD Containing Vista Home Basic 32 Bit, that came with one of my desktop PC.
When prompted to install the OS, I did not format the drive, so, when the computer restarted, there were two Vista OS on start-up screen. Therefore, I repeated the procedure but this time I formated the drive (it did not take more than a few seconds!!!) and than installed the Vista Home Basic. The process went on with loading files and installation but afterwards it was only a dark screen and nothing else...
I tried to repeat the procedure but now, the computer will not load any programme. The screen suggests reinstallation or start in safe mode/from network/ or normally, after which, it remains at the stage with the (C)Microsoft Corporation ...

I tried also to install Windows XP but, after loadiung the files, Setup says THERE ARE NOT HARD DISC DRIVES in my Computer
    Any suggestions please?

Cant restore to factory settings tried 0,f1 and f8 none work

When your Toshiba Satellite laptop goes on the fritz, there are several instances where the best solution is to delete everything and start over. If your system frequently crashes or you can't remove a specific virus, you may want to restore the laptop back to original factory settings. While the easiest way to restore the system is to use the operating system restore disc, it is possible to restore the system without it. Each Satellite laptop also includes a hard drive recovery utility that lets you restore the operating system without the restore disc.

1. Take account of any files or programs you still want to use after the Toshiba laptop is restored back to its factory settings. Transfer the files to a backup location, such as a USB flash drive or external hard drive.

2. Restart the Toshiba Satellite laptop's operating system. Wait for the Toshiba logo to appear on the screen.

3. Press the key that brings up the hard drive disk utility menu. Depending on the specific model of your Toshiba Satellite laptop, the key will either be "0," "F1," or "F8."

4. Press "1" or click "Restore Original Factory Image." Click "Yes." Select "Next" to begin the restoration process.

5. Restart the Toshiba laptop computer when the restoration process finishes running. Follow the prompts that appear on the screen to set up the laptop's date, time and language settings.

6. Transfer the backup copies of the data you saved earlier back to the Toshiba's hard drive. Re-install any programs you need, such as your software firewall or anti-virus tool.

I hope you find it very helpful. Thank you for using fixya.com

From what you've described, it sounds like you need drivers for your sound card (as most non-USB microphones don't need drivers). Please make sure the drivers you download are for the correct operating system.
