My 32av502r television will turn on fine, but there is no picture, but if I hold a flashlight at an angle to the screen, I can see a faint picture. Sound works fine, too. Any ideas?

While it is on, shine a bright flashlight on an angle across the surface away from you. Can you see any faint images on the screen. If yes, then possibly the back lit lamp / board needs to be replaced.
This is a fairly old model flat screen. I would venture a guess that the back light circuit bit the dust. Try the "flashlight test". With the set on, and tuned to a channel that you know has reception, shine a flashlight at the screen at various angles and look to see if you can see a very faint picture image on the screen. If so, the back light is gone. As old as your set is, I would recommend a new one rather than repairs.
Try the flashlight screen test with TV on to be sure an image is showing, hold flashlight above at an angle, if you see a faint image the motherboard needs replacing
Since not a brand or model number listed : If its a LCD set get a flashlight and make the room very dark with the set on. Shine the light on the screen at an angle to see if you see a faint image of the picture on the screen.
You likely have a LCD set there which may likely use a back light inside to light the image, get the room as dark as you can and with a flashlight illuminate the screen from a angle, with set on if you can see the faint image on the screen of the program you have a Backlight issue'
1. Voltage not there or not being switched on for backlight.
2. Actual back light bad.
If the image can be seen with a flashlight one of the above is the issue and your "picture will appear very faintly" also suggests this.
Try the flashlight screen test with TV on to be sure an image is showing, hold flashlight above at an angle, if you see a faint image the motherboard needs replacing
Use a flashlight to shine light near the screen in a 45 degrees angle when the TV is ON, press menu to see if you get fainted dark video in the background. fainted video indicates that the backlight is defective.
This type of failure could be due to a lower backlight inverter voltage as well.
