Samsung LN40C550 TV Logo
Posted on Jan 03, 2011

I am attaching a Dell 1530 laptop trunning Windows Vista to this Samsung ln40c550 monitor using a HDMI cable. The TV is new and so far I have it working okay with my cable box (RF in). The tv connection is only intermittently being recognized by the laptop. Pretty much I have to boot up the laptop to get it to see the tv at all, and if the cable is removed or even jiggled it can't tell when it is replugged. The tv is identifying as a Generic PnP monitor in the Device Manager. Is there a driver I need to load for this to work right? Also I am not getting any sound over the HDMI. I have found the button on the laptop that switches monitors between the built-in and external. This is not solving the problem. If I toggle that button when it is not working right the computer tells me no external monitor is attached.

Go to "Sound" from Control Panel, or from right-click on the Desktop and then choose "Personalize" from the menu. Click "Playback" at the 'Sound' app, you should see "Speakers/Headphones" and "HDMI" codecs.
If "HDMI" is there, simply click on it and click "Set Default"
If you don't see "HDMI" right click on "Sound" and click on 'Show Disabled Devices" -- "HDMI" should appear. If "HDMI" is not there, you need to install the HDMI sound driver. HDMI has its own audio driver separate from the audio system of the computer ( Sigmatel, IDT, or Realtek ) . It is incorporated into the graphics card's driver, so first make sure you have the newest version of your graphics card driver. On models with Intel graphics the HDMI audio driver will appear in the Device Manager as "Audio device on high definition audio bus".

Hope this helps.

I have a Samsung C230 LED monitor and I'm wondering if I can use it with a Roku XD/S in place of a TV via the hdmi cable?

as far as i can tell this monitor is not HDCP compliant ( High Def Copy Protection ) and therefore will not be suitable as a TV monitor. Computers can use non HDCP compliant monitors but TV Tuners, Satellite Receivers, DVD players etc with HDMI are HDCP compliant and must have a HDCP display... HDMI has two formats basically HDCP and non HDCP

Dell insperon 1525 no sound or picture to tv with new hdmi cable connected , it worked fine yesterday but now i can get nothing , it doesnt even show on the tv that the laptop is connected to the tv

When you connect the laptop to the tv with the HDMI cable you will need to press function and F1/F2 depending on your keyboard layout. It is the key with 2 screens on it.
Once you press that windows will show you options for changing displays like Duplicate, Extend, Monitor, Projector(in this case Projector is the TV)
And for audio, you will need to right click on the volume mixer in the system tray and say playback devices. Click on the hdmi one and say set as default.
When this is done, everytime you plug in the HDMI to the TV it will automatically play audio from the TV.

How do i connect my e6400 laptop to a philips LCD

Assuming you are using Windows XP, here is a link to a Microsoft article outlining how to enable the second monitor. The only thing I would add is that once you get into the properties window, your second monitor may show up darkened out. If it is, you need to right-click on it and select "Attached" before continuing on:

I have a Samsung Series 6-650 LCD TV (Model # LN46A650A1F). I am trying to connect my Laptop to use the TV as a monitor and have done everything to make it work, using a VGA/HDMI cable, but the TV refuses...

Why do you use VGA-HDMI cable? This TV works fine with VGA cable - it has VGA plug.
Or if your notebook has DVI output, then you can use DVI/HDMI cable and connect it to the TV to plug named DVI/HDMI (only one HDMI input is marked as DVI on TV).
I suppose that over HDMI the TV supports only some standard resolutions, but over VGA it supports almost every resolution laptops use. You can find supported resolutions for each input in the TV manual. Try setting the same resolution on the laptop.
