Hi,
You could be right about the problem being the inverter or the CCLF lamp, it could also be as simple as a loose cable by what you are describing in your post. If it is the CCLF lamp then you would be better off purchasing a new screen as the labour cost can amount to more than a new screen itself. If its the inverter then it could just need soldering to re-float the solder around the coil.
Seeing as you don't feel comfortable making/troubleshooting the problem yourself then I recommend that you click on the link below and give BnyTech Inc a call and see what they can do for you and at what cost. Link below >>>>

They are based in the "New Yorker" building NY
Good luck.

Alternatively you could send it in to HP but it could cost you considerably more that a PC repair store but you will get a full guarantee with their repair. You will however have to send the laptop in and could take a few weeks for the laptop to returned to you.
It is just frustrating that the thing will come on for a second consistently when opening and closing the laptop. I get the feeling that the lamp works, just won't stay lit. I'm leaning towards the invertor being the problem. But I am no expert and need to get this thing fixed at a reasonable price.

If the laptop has no image at all it can be video card or LCD cable or the LCD panel. About the only non-invasive test you can try is to plug an external monitor into the laptop. This will determine if the problem is motherboard/graphics card or lcd cable/lcd screen. If you have an image on the external monitor then its likely to be lcd/cable/lcd screen.
Is the Displayed Image Faint?
A dim screen can be caused by three things;
1/ The LCD inverter which runs the LCD backlighting
2/ The CCFL backlighting fluro tube in the LCD panel
3/ The motherboard supplying signal & voltage to the inverter.
Thanks

I usually go to HP for repairs. They are reasonable and do it in a timely manner.
The unit is out of warranty and HP was not very helpful or inexpensive in my past encounters with this machine. I was hoping for a better solution, since they just repaired it(LOL) 4 months ago through a third party vendor[under an extended warranty through Cost Co}. Now both the 1 year and 2yr extended warranty have expired(through Cost Co).
I'm just looking for a good repair solution at a reasonable price to get a couple more years use out of the laptop.
