Hey,
you are in the recovery screen most likely because theres a problem with the hard drive, do you have a option to format the drive, if you do, do that, and it should work after that, if not, your hard drive is probably bad and you may have to replace it to a new one.
I'd also suggest trying to update the firmware. you can obtain it here and instructions are on the same page. http://www.archos.com/support/support_tech/updates.html?country=us&lang=enfirm
