I assume you downloaded books but put them into the "Archive". This place holds content for you ready for download (or re-download after deletion) from the Kindle store, but its not actually stored on your Kindle.
The Kindles come with two options for connectivity:
The 3G connectivity works in many countries world-wide, I don't think it was an easy negotiation by Amazon to get so many mobile phone service providers to accept a one-time upfront payment for unlimited data transfer.
The Canaries, however, seem not to have made it to the list. You would need access to a Wi-Fi hotspot (Hotel, Airport, Restaurant, ...) to view archived content, or physically download the books to your device before you go to holidays.
