I ran into same issue, would love to know your fix if you have one......I have an email into Garmin for support, because neither of the steps below worked for me.
From what I gathered, you need to try these steps first
a) hold enter and mode simultaneously 4+ seconds to reset the device, or
b) (THIS STEP WILL DELETE YOUR DATA) hold mode, light, and up simultaneously for 4+ seconds.
Those steps did not work for me either! Is there another fix? Otherwise the watch is unusable.
I have experienced the exact asked problem and Garmin had me send my watch back to them and they said that upon the arrival of my old FR60 they would send me a new one no charge. It must be a known issue because I got mine in 2012 and they didn't seem to mind at all. Call the sports watch department. They will help you.
I too had the same problem. When I called up Garmin the representative told me to basically let the battery sit out 24 hours because there was residual from the old battery and by letting the watch sit battery free for 24 hours that would resolve the problem. I unfortunately had such a difficult time getting the back of my watch off initially I had to go to a jeweler and now I have to do the same thing to hope this will fix the problem. If anyone here had any luck with getting the back off and let their watch sit battery free please let me know if this works.
The only other option is to send the old watch in and get a refurbished product $89 or purchase a new watch. I told the rep this information about letting the battery sit out should be put in the user manual to let all purchasers be informed.
