    Hi,

My fans are working, I think that my graphics card is potetially shorting out/or over heating because now when I leave my laptop off for 2 days and start it up, the screen goes blank before windows has a chance to boot up. It is a very old laptop, I think i'm jsut going to toss it. Thanks for all your help.

Have you checked to see that your fans are working, and or if your graphics card is over heating or potetially shorting out?

When I try to update Bios on Toshiba Satellite A215-S7462 The computer 'locks up' (becomes completely unresponsive), and the computer's display goes blank (turns off).

Hello,

Updating the BIOS usually brings up some problems. It burns the motherboard. I suggest that you contact Toshiba regarding this for warranty support.

Upgrading BIOS! If it isn't broken don't fix it. Upgrading is a scapegoat fix, and many manufactures have a disclaimer. "You are on you own", and the likes for a reason. Most solutions are found elsewhere. However, if you truly need to update read this to help you with the upgrade. You don't want to end up with a brick. http://www.techrepublic.com/blog/10things/10-common-mistakes-you-should-avoid-when-flashing-your-bios/357

Laptop goes blank on startup but still display logon screen

Have you upgraded the OS? At boot start tapping the F-2 key, do not wait for the Dell screen. Take a look at this forum:http://www.computing.net/answers/windows-95/dell-s-bios-startup-screen/85976.html

I am trying to diagnose a problem with my son's laptop screen going blank. I shall try to describe the symptoms. 1. When plugged into an external monitor, everything works fine. 2.The laptop screen...

Have you check the cable that goes from the screen at the motherboard? Usually this cable is not visible; it is hidden it one of the joints between screen and main body of the notebook. This cable is the most common problem in the cases that the notebook keeps on working although the screen is black. You can check it by opening slowly - slowly the screen all the way up and closing again slowly. If there is a cut at the cable your screen will get black at a specific slope.

In case of a problem or clarification, don't hesitate to post me a reply before rejecting my answer.
If you are satisfied, accept my solution.

Thanks and regards

Do not start up, black screen

Hello,

I'll asume something for this one it might help. Make sure your laptop is completely turned off [No fans turn, screen black, no hard drive light]. When you then press the power button, immediately keep pressing the F8 button on your keyboard. It should then actually display two options after a while :

*Delete restore/resume point and start windows
*Resume restore/resume point

Select 'Delete restore point' and the unit should boot up fine again.

I had a unit that was basically turbo-booting into windows, but the restore point was corrupt and it always seemed it had a 'blank screen' problem.

You can also try to access the BIOS by pressing F2 as soon as the unit starts up to see if you can actually access the BIOS.

If that all doesn't help I suggest reseating RAM.

Screen goes blank after afew second on ac inly

Try booting to the Safe Mode (F8 at boot) see if you get any further. Also, does the system complete boot (DO you hear windows sounds?) or is the system just hanging after the Splash screen (You can also try an external monitor and press Fn+F8 to enable the external display) If you can get video externally, then is it likely a LCD or video card failure. If you can't boot to the safe mode and you do not hear the Windows Welcome sound that normally plays at the desktop, then the system is not booting and you have either a hard drive failure and/or an operating system failure.
See if you can boot to the BIOS (F2 at boot), then reload the default settings and reboot.

If you suspect the OS is a problem, boot to the XP CD, then run CHKDSK /R and see if that helps
You can also run system Diagnostics by pressing Fn+the Power button

Blank screen with cycling colours (no BIOS; no POST)

Try running diagnostics. Tap F12 repeatedly on the dell logo till you get the boot device menu. Choose diagnostics. Go through it.

If it doesnt even pull up the diagnostics, you can follow this walkthrough from dell's website.
