You`ve mentioned that ON CERTAIN CHANNELS THE TV WORKS FINE, so your trying to say that not all channels THE BLACK SQUARE APPEARS IN THE MIDDLE O THE SCREEN... my be that black square is generated from the broadcast center. may be your unit is good. let me ask you how many channels that your tv works fine..?
your captioning or "text" is on. usually inside the tv menu. if not its your cable or dish box has captioning on. black box usually means its in text mode instead of CC thus the black box rather than text
If the broadcast is in 4:3 (square) then either you can have the black bars on the side, or the TV can stretch the image to fill the screen.
Nothing wrong with your set. The broadcast must be in 16:9 to fil the screen.
I have a Sharp Tv that had the same problem with a large brownish or black square right in the middle of the screen. It only left about an inch around the edges that you
could see the picture moving in behind the big black block or square.I have DISH sat-elite and the book recomending that I check and see if the "caption settings" were on
or off. They were on. I turned the caption settings off and the large square diappeared.
Sounds like a digital cable issue to me. Try connecting the cable directly to the TV bypassing the cable box and I bet that the issue will be gone. If so then contact your cable provider as the box or the incomming signal may be at falt.
