Instructions Things You'll Need:

  • DVD
  • RCA, component, or HDMI cable(s)
  1. Decide what type of connection to use. Look at the back of your DVD player. It should at least have RCA (red, yellow, white) output ports. It may also have component out, S-video out, VGA out, or HDMI out. These connections vary in picture quality and price, HDMI being the most expensive and providing for the highest-quality picture. Whichever type of connection you decide to use, you also need to verify that you have the same connection on your TV. Flat screen TVs typically have more connection options than other types of TVs, so you should at least have component, RCA and HDMI inputs.
  2. Connect the DVD payer to the flat screen TV. Take one end of the cable or cables you decided to use and connect to the output on the DVD player. The other end should be connected to the corresponding input on the TV. Video input connections are usually found on the sides of flat screen TVs. Once the DVD player has been connected, you are ready to use your DVD player.
  3. Check DVD player functionality. Tune your TV to the input that you used for your DVD player by pressing the button on your remote labeled "input," "source," "TV/video," Source select," "TV/AV" or the like. For instance, if you used an HDMI cable plugged into your TV's "HDMI 1" input, press the input selection button until you see HDMI 1 on the screen. Power on the DVD player, insert a DVD into the player and press play and you should now see a feed from your DVD player.

Okay, I have an older Sony Trinitron, tube type. I have connected the RGA cables to DVD player and TV. I can play a DVD, but the remote will not work, thus I cannot play episodes as in True Blood, I can only see the first one, since remote doesn't work, I cannot toggle to the other eps. The remote has new batteries, but that light never comes on. All I have is the basic cable connection, the coaxial cable, and there isn't an outlet in DVD player that this will fit, unless there is some kind of connector for this to work. Help!

When I play a DVD, it is in black and White. When I play the tv it is in colour. Can't get the DVD to play in colour!

You have one of several possible problems, ranging from best case scenario to worst case scenario:
A DVD video that is supposed to be black and white - try a different disc.
Some setting on the DVD player is set to monotone - check manufacturer's instructions
A bad set of cables connecting the dvd player to the tv - test a known good set of cables
A bad output on the DVD player - test DVD player with a different TV.
A bad input on the TV - try another input if possible, test TV with a known working video input.
