What is the largest memory card I can use with this camera? Is 16g too large? I get a memory card error message when I put one in and I cannot format it.

The problem is that your camera is only compatible with SD cards, not SDHC cards. You bought a larger card for your older camera, not noticing that it was SDHC (or not knowing that it mattered). The new card doesn't work, not because it or the camera is broken, but because it's not compatible.

Cards up to 2Gb are generally SD.
Cards of 4Gb are generally SDHC.
Cards over 8Gb have to be SDHC.

(There are exceptions. Sometimes, manufacturers make 4Gb SDHC cards but some have errors; they disable half of the chip and sell it as 2Gb, but it's still SDHC. 4Gb cards are almost always SDHC because they're cheaper, but 4Gb SD cards do exist. They are so rare that I've even seen a guru on this site claim they don't. I did own one once, but it was very expensive and turned out to be so unreliable that I had to return it. I don't recommend looking for one, because of the problems.)

Your solution is to go find a 2Gb card, and be extra sure that it doesn't say "SDHC" on it.

According to the manual, the DCM-LC33 uses MMC and SD cards. Your 16GB card is actually an SDHC card and will not work. SD cards max out at 2GB.

Try formatting through the computer rather than from within the camera itself. Or, just open the card on the computer, select all, then delete. There's probably a large file in there somewhere that the camera just doesn't have enough ooomphh to move out.

Hope this helps. :)

Put a new 4gig card in as I lost the old 1

I verified that I cannot format my 4 GB cards in the Coolpix 5700. This camera simply cannot use large memory cards. You should get a 1 GB card for this camera (I verified that 1 GB cards do work).

On screen it says memory card error please check the card. i have put 2 cards in with same result photos go to internal memory and wont take photos with card in slot

Make sure the cards are 2GB or less, 2GB is the largest the camera can support. If they are, you may need to format the cards to use with the camera. Press Menu/Set to display the PLAY mode menu and select the item to set. Select Format and confirm by select Yes. The owner's manual says to perform this procedure when you get MEMORY CARD ERROR.

Reformat of XD card - comes up with card error

The problem is that the largest xD card that your camera can support is an M or H 512mb card. The 1gb or 2gb cards are not compatible. The firmware in the camera cannot support memory storage with that capacity. The camera came out before those cards did and there no plans to upgrade the camera to allow those types of cards to be supported.

As far as the 128mb card is concerned if it gets a card error message try cleaning off the gold contacts on the back of the card and reinserting it to the camera. If it still gives an error it may be a problem with the internal card reader in the camera.

Unable to format memory card

You mentioned in your post "the above camera", but I can't find the make/model of your camera? Check on the manufacturer's website to see what the largest capacity card can be used in your camera. Knowing the make/model and searching for the message on the internet can yield better answers to your question.
