Hi,

Hold it! Not just yet. Let's try doing a few steps here.
This is a bit complicated so we have to be very careful in doing so. The main goal that we have is to Delete the Upper and Lower Filters on your registry, and that's what makes it complicated.

To start with
>Click on START
>Type REGEDIT on the search bar on START Menu
>Expand HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
>Expand SYSTEM
>Expand CurrentControlSet
>Expand Control
>Expand Class
>Click {4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
>Look for the Upper Filters / right click on it / click on Delete
>Look for the Lower Filters / right click on it / click on Delete
>Try you CD / DVD ROM

I hope it helped you out. Rating my assistance will greatly be appreciated. Should you have any followup questions feel free to post it here and I always get back to my resolutions. Thank you for choosing FixYa! Have a good one.

DVDRRW recognizes CDs, not DVDs.

What PC ,
HP Pavilion Media Center TV m8100n Desktop PC
what OS, we cant guess, OS, ever. say it. please.
then we can talk. it came new with XP/VISTA/W7
which one is yours? (then and now, did you upgrade to w10 for free? we cant guess that either,)

"regardless of type (DVD )" does that mean , using program manager
explorer, (my PC, my computer, app) cant see files on a real
store bought DVD? or cant read any windows disks, real install DVD? from HP or MS?
or cant read DVD-r , Only, ? be more clear on media, even give a real example .
like my computer app runs and sees it but media player don't.

ill guess XP and real DVDs can not be seen by ANY means.

if running XP , why? XP is not only a Virus magnet ask (UK hospitals that fun....)but also , has no support or is buggy on many DVD drives made. and also many USB ports and devices can be dead on XP, XP sux really... and vista close 2nd
If not on W7, upgrade it now, and win. really.

if not already.
never post lacking OS or the post will go NOWHERE fast.

there are patches for XP, for 16 long years, endless.
HP has none
MS has none, (ok 1)
you just dig them up from the toxic internet of viruses..
the toxic soup.
got SP3 from XP that is mandatory in all cases, and the reg patch for DVDs. yes, there is one.
as is the one and only, 3 month old MS patch to stop
the RANSOMEWare. attacks.

what OS what OS what OS?

DVD works but cd does not work

Hi Chellu,

Looks like the drive was a lemon. The laser lens used to read cd's and dvd's are seprate and seems loke the one for cd is gone bad. if your pc is in warrenty cal the manufacturer and have them replace it. if not in warrenty open the chassie see if the drive is connected with a wide ribbon cable(ata) or a two pair green or blue wire(sata). depending on that get a new one from radioshack or something.

I hope it helps!!
cheers

Dell 9200 desktop. New motherboard, recognizes DVD drive, won't recognize CD-RW. As machine boots, it does show the CD-RW on SATA port 2. Windows XP. Any suggestions? Fixing for a friend since Dell are...

1st question... does the cd-rw recognizes (read) standard cd's... if so it just a driver prob.. if not then find the incidence of the device in the Device manager, delete it and restart thecomputer. Also.. you may go to the dell website and re install any available driver. One last measure... rare but sometimes the connection are loose and not seated properly..

Turn off the computer, unplug, open case push on ALL the connectors and are seated..(including memory)....

If all that fails then its a bad drive... also rare but a lot more common with mass produced comp. It may still be under warranty and at worst ;you may have to pay ship and handling.

pleas email and notify fixya if this helps.
