I have a different suggestion based on my washer's similar problem. If the black stuff is powdery and localized at the back of the unit, more than likely the culprit is the drum pulley itself is warped, causing the belt to chafe against the drum. The black powder is rubber residue from the scraping of belt on plastic. No need to replace unit. New belt and new pulley run about $70 each.
Drum bearings and water seal have failed usually confirmed as a rumbling noise when drum is spun by hand the black stuff is grease and wash water leaking from the bearings due to the failure of the water seal in front of the bearings

Thanks for your help! Thats what I tought. 2 years old and looking at $500.00 to $600.00 repair parts and labor, the bearings are pressed into the drum. I'll see what GE customer relations will do? A new one is $699.00 at home depot were we got the first one for $764.15 something really isn't right.
