First off, is the battery charged?
Batteries get old, and tend to not hold a charge like when they were new.
If the "crackling" sound you describe is a series of rapid clicks, this is a sign or either a low battery voltage, or a bad ground.

It probably needs replacing. Batteries are generally the first component to go faulty on cell phones. It might be swollen -- this is a clear indication that the battery is useless.

You need to charge your battery up more. Either get a battery charger or leave the jumper cables hooked up for a longer period of time.
Your battery was probably completely dead. You might even need a new battery...they really don't like to be completely drained.

The voltmeter should only go as high as 14-15 volts when the engine is running. I would check for a poor connection between the battery and starter.

You need new battery for sure.When you install the new battery, check it with a volt meter (D.C.) that it charges at 14V +/- 0.5V at idle with your high beam on. If it doesn't, you need a regulator/rectifier as well.

I think you have a dead battery try to change it and if it doesnt work it will be a charger connector problem

i would buy a new ear cup.and a new battery. and perhaps a new cord.
i had a problem w/ my ear cups and i noticed that when i bought the new ear cups the sound was better.
i also read that if the battery got alot of usage (4 plus year) then the whistling noise comes from that. i'm starting to have the same problem. i have had my headphones for a long time. i think like anything else that operates on batteries its time to change it.
