0ne of 3 has failed:

1. Backlight inverter
2. Power Supply
3. Backlight

More specifically on #1 and #2 - capacitors either bulging, leaking, or exploded.

I have a 4 year old 47" vizio lcd about 6 months ago it startied taking a long time for the picture to come on turn on get the vizio screen then black for a couple minutes then picture. couple nights
Defective LED back lights strips, or damaged EEPROM on main board. I will try a main board first, if you do nor have a TV LED strip tester.

Black screen with sound
My 47" LCD Smart T.V. was working fine last night. I got up this morning and I have sound but no picture. The VIZIO icon lights up as usual but I get no picture, only sound. From the time I turned it on, nothing appeared on the screen. I have already tried unplugging it for a while and still nothing.

Screen went black but sound still works.
What kind of input are you using? If you are using 3 cables (white, red, yellow, then possibly your white and red (sound) are still plugged in but the yellow (picture) cable has come lose on the back of the TV or on another machine it is feeding from such as a DVD player or other equipment.

HAVE A VIZIO GV47L. NO SOUND. NO PICTURE. While watching TV the TV went black. Tried turning it off but was unable to via remote or the touch panel.Finally unplugged it from the power surge protector....
Despite of no image do you still have sound(happens in case of malfunctioning backlight or T-con board)?

Clean the LVDS cable connectors to get rid of the oxidation. This may do the trick.

How do I get a full picture on my vizio 47 inch. All my hd stations have a screen image of widescreen wit black on both the top and bottom. My other vizio 47 does not have this problem.
you need to check the resolution on cable box
and check the format botton in remote control

Sounds like the power supply/mainboard. I have a VO32L which is the same mainboard as VO37L and it had blown caps along the aluminum heat sink.

Vizio 47" lcd no picture no sound has power
this could be one of two problem. first, check if you have back light. If you do then the problem is with the M/B. Second, if you don't have back light then the inverter is bad and needs to be replace.
