Maytag neptune gas dryer was purchased in 1998. Had matching pair. Washer went long agodue to faulty transmission. dryer just went a little while ago. Basically when i press start it doesnt want to start up (it attempts) but i held it down and it almost started up again but then i smelled burning so i must have burnt the switch. could it also be the motor that was not allowing the dryer to turn on - only to slowly spin and not actually turn on without me holding start? Im fairly handy and feel i could replace the motor myself. Where is a good place to look for motors for these models?

If the motor is not burnt up you will need to change the capacitor on the motor it energizes the motor to start up and should be on the side of the motor. Presently it is single phasing or just turning over and not getting all of the power it needs.

SOURCE: Neptune dryer model 4000, <10 y.o., hums, but won't start.

I wouldn't know about the warranty, but the dryer motor may need only a start relay, which is usually attached to the motor. Usually, this is a centrifugal device. By that I mean the contacts on the relay are normally closed to give the motor extra starting capacity when you first turn it on. The contacts open after the motor get up to full speed.

SOURCE: Maytag Neptune Dryer smells like burning rubber or plastic...

could be the board, could be a motor, could be a belt but i would run it intill something just stops or try your best to take it apart and look through things and see if you can see an indication.

SOURCE: Maytag Dryer won't start withouth me turning the drum.

Good day. Ugly problem.
My first choice would have been the motor, but.......
Here is the process, it might help you.
The power to the motor goes first to and thru the door switch. It then returns to the timer.
When the timer is turned to any running position, power leaves the timer where it is split into 2 leads.

One of the power leads goes directly to the centrifugal switch Which is the switch on the motor with all the wires. If you spin the drum, you also spin the motor, and if spun fast enough will close the contacts on the cetrifugal switch, thus sending power to the motor, allowing it to run. I guess you have done that.

The second lead out of the timer goes to the push to start switch, it then leaves and goes to the centrifugal switch but on the power side, so it is directly connected to the main winding in the motor.
That is why when you press the press to start switch, the motor runs, and if held in it will continue to run.
In fact, at this point, the motor had 2 sources of power, either of which can run the motor.
Thus releasing the push to start switch doesn't matter, since it runs off the other source.

Possibilities.
The centrifugal switch is not wired right. Please recheck. (or the motor was bad out of the box. Happens).
The push to start switch is bad, and needs replaced.
Or, the wiring going to or leaving the push to start switch has broken or making a bad connection.
Lastley, I said the power comes out of the timer and splits into 2 circuits. Not always true, in some models the timer sends 2 seperate wires out carrying the power, with the possibility the timer could be bad.

Hope this helps.

SOURCE: Maytag dryer makes an electrical buzzing noise when start button

It sounds to me like the motor is not turning, but the heating element is coming on. with no air flowing over the element, it is getting too hot. Can you operate the start switch with the top tilted up so you can see if the motor is turning but the drum is not, and just where the buzzing is coming from. Also, I would try the dryer on manual setting and on air dry to see if any setting works. Good luck

Replace Roller on MCG5500AW

if you already got into the dryer and are at the rollers all you need to do is remove the front clip with a needle nose plyers, the blades have to be thin enough to fit into the two holes on the clip, spread the clip open just a little, enough just to remove it,then slide the roller off, remove the old washer on the shaft, sand down the shaft and then slide the new washer on then the new roller, another washer and then the clip, you don't have to remove the back wall to change out the rollers.roller part number is 12001541

The washer shakes violently then the off balance sensor trips when a load is in the washer.

I had this washer at one point in time. was not very happy with it, even though i sold it to alot of my customers. usually if the machine is shaking violently it means one of a couple things. first make sure your washer is properly leveled. if it is make sure you washing the same types of clothes in the load, no mixed loads of towels with shirts. if your problem is not that then you possibly have a bad clutch. which will cause the tumbling wheels to spin during your spin cycle as well, its a costly fix so i would consider a new front loading maytag/whirpool if that is your problem. remember this machine was designed by maytag, since then they were purchased by whirlpool and everything is on a whirlpool platform now. if you do purchase a new washer and have the matching dryer to your neptune TL, it would recommended to replace the dryer as well, considering the capacity of these machines are smaller then most of the new high efficiency machines on the market today.
