If the iPad has frozen on a screen press and hold both the lock and home buttons for about 30 seconds. This will hard reset the iPad and it should then boot normally.
Ooh. My 2-year-old Literati did the same thing. Multiple attempts to reset (paperclip in the hole in the back) and to do a hard reset (regular reset + pressing and holding the power button) failed. Mine was frozen and kept flashing the opening screen. I had to plug it in with the charger and then hold the reset button for a full minute before mine would shut off and start working again. I have a feeling though that I will have to repeat this every time I turn it off to charge it.
