1

Determine the type of case back on the watch. Set the watch face down on a soft surface and look at the back. If it has slots, it is defined as a screw-back case. If it is smooth, it is defined as a snap-back case.
2

To open a screw-back watch, use the metal blade of a standard screwdriver to turn the slots counterclockwise. A case-back wrench, which can be purchased at watch-repair stores, can also be used. Set the metal tips of the wrench into the back's slots and turn it counterclockwise to open.
3

For a snap back case, place the metal blade of a standard screwdriver in the indent between the watch and the case. Gently apply pressure to lift the case up and off of the watch.
4

Close the case back by setting it back onto the watch. For snap-back cases, line up the indent on the side of the watch and press gently on the case back to close. For screw-back cases, use the screwdriver blade or case-back wrench to turn the slots clockwise, thereby closing the case shut.

How can I remove the back to change battery?

Yep.. unless you have a self winding one. They require a sharp jewelers tool to open.. Sometime you can do it yourself , but you chance ruining the watch with scratches. The jeweler puts the watch in a holder that protects the crown and steady the watch. He then takes a tool and inserts it in the seam of the watch back and pops the back open. After the battery is changed the back is pressed back into place by the devise that can put pressure on the back without risking cracking the crown.. Come on man it's only 8 bucks. Just remember once the back has been opened water proof can not be guaranteed anymore.

I recently purchased a GWR Pocket Watch from York Railway Museum. I can open the watch to see the time, but cannot see how to open the back to adjust it (it is currently on BST) or to change the batt

All watches open from the back. Closely inspect the back cover and find the depression in the edge that a thin knife edge can pry open the cover. Search carefully and pry open but do not force. Most watches are very tightly sealed to prevent moisture from entering, however, if you can pry open at some point along the back cap, look for a thin rubber gasket. If there is not a gasket no worries. Use a C-clamp or hand-vise to clamp the back cover tightly. Be sure to allow the stem slot, adequate clearance so you don't damage it. Look for a "dip" in the case back and locate stem. Hold in place with tape while you squeeze the back into place using the c clamp or vise slowly.

How do you open the back of a movado watch

It could require several tools.

If it is a screw down back you will need a case-back opener (sold at Harbor Freight for $2.99). It is adjustable to fit most case backs. Make sure the wrench fits the notches on the back and rotate counter-clockwise
If it is a snap on case use a knife type case back opener.
Look for a small indention on the case-back that allows you to snap the back off. (some watches have the indention, some do not)
You need to be very careful not to scratch the back

You may need a case-back press to put the snap case back on. Some you can snap on with your fingers other will require the press.

Can;t open back of watchto find date it was made do i need special tool or some thing else can be used

You definitely need special Rolex case back opener. Without it your watch will be locked forever. Rolex cases are so tight, that even when special opener is used, you will need quite strong arms to open it. Rolex case openers sometimes sells on ebay, but they are never cheap.

Cannot open clasp prestige replica rolex

1)Unscrew the crown until it pops out, the same way you would unscrew the crown to change the time on the watch.
2)Place the watch case opener in the notches around the outside of the back of the watch case. You have to use a watch case opener made for Rolex watches to open the watch. Once the case opener is in place, twist it and the back will pop open.
3)Use a mini screwdriver to loosen a tiny screw on the inside of the watch located near the stem. You do not need to unscrew fully--only loosen it.
4)Pull the crown straight out. The crown and stem should come out easily.
To open the back of the watch
1)Purchase a Rolex watch back opener set, if you do not already have one. This set is able to open and close any size of Rolex case.
2)Match the size of your Rolex case with the same size of grooved metal die from the tool set.
3)Put the metal die on the grooves on the back of the watch case.
4)Turn the die to remove the case.
5)Remove the rubber gasket.
This will help. Thanks please keep updated.please do rate the solution positively .thank you for using fixya

Pocket watch stem is broken.

To open the front, try a toothpick in the hole. You will need to get the stem replaced.

To open the back:
Flip the watch over and look around the edge. There will be small slots. A thin blade like a pocket knife will open the back cover. Carefully, put the knife blade into the slot and twist it open. There isn't much user serviceable stuff inside.

I can't seem to remove the back casing on my Bulova watch in order to replace the battery.

If you take a small scredriver (one that is used to repair eyeglasses) and run it gently around the rim of the back, you will feel a slight indentation where you can insert the screwdriver to open up the back. The battery is easily accesible but then it's tough to get the back back on!

Canot get the back off my Indiglo watch to change the battery

There is different proccedure for different watch to take out the back. Following are some of the proccedure to open the backcover of the watches:-
1. Some plastic watch have four screw in the back, you just have to unscrew the screws and take out the back.

2. Some of the watch have press back technology, which enables the watch to be water resistant and thus, the backcover of these watches are pressed very tight. You just need a back opener, and at the back if this back opener has to placed between the case and backcover and has to be tilted and backcover can be opened.
(Backopener is a tool which is like thick & hard blade with sharp edges like knife but not very sharp; these edges can get easily between the gap of backcover and case. - this tool can be obtained from any watch tools store easily)
