Re-installing operating system

I'm am trying to re-install the WinXP operating system onto a new second hard drive while retaining the original OS on the C drive. I have the original factory supplied system recovery discs. When I run it, it says it will re-format the drive without asking me which drive I want to install to. How can I get it to install to the new drive without erasing the C drive?
I have a NetVista 8310-4GU machine.

I am still trying to re-install the WinXP operating system using the original factory supplied system
recovery discs. The program runs to the point where I get an Error #91
"Disk manager is detected on Drive 1 but is not running". I hit ok and
get an additional message; Error #87 "Unable to initiate engine".

If you boot to the CD (on boot with the CD in the drive you should get a screen with the option to boot to the CD, if your boot order in your BIOS is set to CD ROM before Hard Drive), you should (after loading files for a while) get to a screen that will allow you to select the drive/partition to install to. If trying to install from within the Windows environment it won't happen.

You probably won't be able to get to format the drive with your recovery CD set since you arrive at the errors you mentioned and I don't know if the Recovery disk is bootable? So I would try to borrow or download and burn a Windows XP OS image file to a CD/DVD and try booting to the disk.
You can check/reset your boot order by entering your BIOS settings and locating "Boot Order" and setting it to search CD ROM drive before Hard Drive.

I just changed the haard drive in my hp g72. when i turn it back on it says no bootable device insert boot disc and press any key what does that mean hard drive didn't come with a disc

there is no operating system on a new hard drive
you have to install the os
that means that you have to use a disc in a cd unit that has an operating system on it ( win 7, winxp etc)
you have to go into the bios setting and change it from boot from hard drive to boot from cd
then when you start the computer it selects the boot from the cd and the os is installed onto the hard drive
when that is done you go back into the bios and change it back to boot from hard drive
next you have to install all the drivers for the graphics card , printer, keyboard if wireless , mouse , microsoft office essentials to get e-mail etc
If this is all beyond you take it to a computer shop and have it all done

I have an asus netpad for daughter but its missing ntldr file and keeps repeating cntrl- alt-del and wont go to boot up squence? i was originally trying to put larger hdd inside but same model though .is...

When you install a new hard drive into any computer, the operating system needs to be installed because new drives typically come blank. So when it says Ntldr is missing that is the computer bios telling you that there is no operating system for it to boot, or if there is one on the drive it is damaged beyond repair and must be reinstalled. So get your Windows install disk and boot from the cd (usually will automatically when disk is in the drive) and reinstall the OS. If there is no optical (CD) drive, then you'll have to make a USB boot drive on a flash drive with the install CD on another computer and use it to boot from and install the OS.

Operating system not found

No, you won't get the OS to automatically install on the new drive. The OS is not stored in the BIOS chip (or a similar permanent location inside the computer). You will need an OS install disc (not an upgrade disc). Windows Vista Home Premium or Basic was the original OS on most of the Acer Aspire 4530 series. Acer appears to have drivers for the system for XP through Windows 7 to get the hardware to work. You will need to have these most of these ready before you install your OS. Put them on a flash drive or optical disc using another computer.

This computer may work with Unix as well. However, driver issues may be a factor. You can try most versions of Unix from a CD (LiveCD) to test it out.

When you get a new hard drive, install it into the laptop. Then put the OS disk in the optical drive bay. Boot to the optical drive. Follow the directions for formatting the hard drive and installing the OS. (Of course you will need a drive that doesn't have a higher capacity than the BIOS supports.) The motherboard needs to recognize the drive.

If you find a member of a Windows User Group, they may have Windows install discs available. The license number on the label of your computer will probably work as your license key. (The key for a computer like this is locked to the CPU and motherboard; unless someone upgraded the OS to Windows 7 or downgraded to XP, this should be the key you need.) Use the information on the label to obtain the correct version of Vista (the Basic install disc may not work for installing Home Premium). You also need to match the 32-bit or 64-bit install disc (and the service pack you need).

I hope this helps.

Cindy Wells
(An Acer recovery disc wouldn't help you. Most of those are completely locked to the original hardware (including hard drive) and look for the recovery partition that was on that hard drive.)

I have a PC Dell Dimension 2400 with a hard 40 GB

Basically when you install a new boot drive you need to install Windows operating system on the new hard drive, also the device drivers (eg video, audio, modem, LAN etc), your programs and data. The reason programs has to be installed is because the installation process copied DLL files to the System folders and makes changes to the registry.
You can only copy your data onto the new hard disk.
To avoid copying your data to the new hard drive, you can set up the old hard drive as second hard drive (ie. slave drive), if you delete the redundant folders and leave only the data folders then you have an adddition 40Gb of disk space.

Hello how do i start windows bypass

I would like to ask, how did you install the operating system onto the new drive? Term refers to a format or configuration that was stopped before it completed its taks. If you are certan your files are good, I would recommend making the second hhd a slave and copy all the files to the new hard.

Ive tried 3 diff hd's all say no os found when i inow there is a os there its a e-machine any suggestions

A hard drive is where your operating system is located, so did you install the operating system onto each of the three hard drives. And if they were already installed prior to you installing them into your system it still wont work, it will need to be configured for your hardware setup. Put in a hard-drive and install the os from scratch this will get you up and running.
