I have the same machine and this seems to happen if the grounds bin is pulled out before it goes through a full cycle. take both the grounds and water trays out. Try to fit the grounds bin around the "elevator", slide the grounds tray underneath that then the water tray as well. It should slide right in then the machine will complete the cycle and work just fine :)
We left the coffee grounds bin out and replaced the water tray and grounds bin holder. That let the grounds bin holder slide all the way in. I think there is a little microswitch in there and, once the holder is in place it completes the cycle. Then clean the grounds out of the bottom of the machine and you're back in business!
Depress the microswitch that detects the drawer - back right on the E9, then cycle the machine. You should be able to get the drawer back in after that.
