I had
the same problem with windows 7 and some time ago with vista and after endless
hours found a solution which I can now describe for windows 7 only but It
should also work in a similar way for vista. first of
all download the latest complete mfc installation software from brother
for your mfc printer - this is a big file of more than 120mb. I have installed
the 32bit version although I have win7-64 but generally I have better results with
32bit drivers for general application purpose. also
download the software to delete the pnp drivers delinf_10100.exe. then download
the CCleaner from http://www.piriform.com/
(or if you have registry cleaner then use this - the ccleaner is free and
good). use
windows explorer to examine and delete files and look for this directory (in
win7): c:\Users\<your user name>\AppData\Local\Temp. if you
do not find this directory then open: Tools/Folder Options.../View/ and there
make that hidden files and folders are being displayed (the default is hidden). if you
do not even see the menu 'Tools' the go to Organize/Layout/ and activate the
Menu Bar. then Tools will also appear. when you
have finally found c:\Users\<your user name>\AppData\Local\Temp then you
can start the work. - empty
your waste basket so it is completely empty - if you
know the procedure then make a new system restore point - delete
all files and folders in c:\Users\<your user name>\AppData\Local\Temp\
(only in the Temp_directory) - in control
panel uninstall the existing brother mfc software (do not reboot yet) - run
the downloaded delinf_10100.exe to delete possible pnp drivers (plug'n play) - run
the cclean registry cleaner until you will not find anymore bad registry
entries - turn
off and disconnect the brother device from your pc/notebook - reboot
the system and run the registry again -
install the brother software until it asks you to plug in the usb cable and
turn on the printer - then
wait - the pc is working but unfortunately not showing much of this.... - when
the installation is finished you might have to reboot again - then
you are don and all should be fine (cc4 running and twain driver installed successfully) good
luck! ron
Here is the link from where you can download the driver, just filter the results by your operating system and then scroll down to the Printer Driver & Scanner Driver section: http://welcome.solutions.brother.com/bsc/public/us/us/en/dlf/download_top.html?reg=us&c=us&lang=en&prod=mfc7840w_all
