Need to know how to replace the starter rope. Do I rewind completely first, then add rope or let the recoil wind rope. I need to rewind CCW?

depends on what machine it is your trying to fit the rope to!! some you have to take off the spring tension and remove the pulley in order to feed the rope into and put knot on bottom of pulley, however most briggs and stratton and honda recoil starters you can pull the rope completely out and remove rope then fit new rpe and let spring pull it back in

How do I replace the starter (pull) rope on a toro ccr2450 (model 38413)?

Although it looks like you simply un-bolt the recoil starter you need remove the whole blower (flywheel) housing as there are nuts on the back side.
  • Once the housing is off, remove the broken rope and prepare a length of rope to replace it base upon the old ropes length. Probably close to 6 feet.Don't forget to put the pull handle on the new rope.
  • Tighten the recoil pulley in the direction it normally turns as you pull the rope out until it stops.
  • Slowly back of up to one turn to align the hole in the pulley with the housing hole and hold it in that position while you insert the rope and try a sturdy knot.
  • Slowly let recoil assembly pull the rope back in and test that it is working properly before re-installing the housing.
  • Once you are satisfied that the recoil is working properly re-install the remaining covers.

Recoil starter assembly

If you can post the engine make, model and serial number I can get a diagram for you. They are usually stamped in the engine housing. Start by removing bolts to remove cover and check spring. If spring is good you should be able to rewind. You will need to cut rope by handle and pull rope up between spindle and inner housing, rewind rope in direction of pull. Let it rewind while holding tip of rope. When satisfied with tension, push end of rope back through hole in cover and reattach handle. This can be tricky. I am thinking of posting a video of this procedure. Let me know if you have more question's.Good luck.

How do I reset the starter cord to rewind. It does not recoil when I pull it to start. I have to take the cover off and do it manually.

Hopefully you don't have a broken recoil spring. If the spring is not broken, then it's just a matter of rewinding the starter rope with the spring tension wound. I'll give you links to my two favorite videos on how to do this, as each machine is similar, yet slightly different. After viewing both videos, you should be able to do this on your machine:

I hope this helps. Best of luck to you.

The recoil spring on my 1986 victa lawn mower will not rewind the starter cord. Is this easy to fix?

Hi and welcome to FixYa, I am Kelly

- Remove the recoil assembly. Depending on engine model you may have to remove the air shroud with the recoil.
- Remove the broken rope assembly from the spool by lifting the knot out of the hole and cut off the knot.
- Pull the remainder of the old rope out of the recoil spool
- Take the remainder of rope out of the pull handle

On the new rope burn the ends with a match. With wet fingers pinch the ends of the rope while hot/melted until it is the same size as the rope. Form a point on the ends
- Install the new rope in the handle by threading it into the handle and tie ONE small knot on the end.
- Pull very hard on the rope until the new knot seats in the handle. Assemble handle.
- PREWIND the spool in the recoil until it stops winding. I.e. max out spring tension but do not over wind it or you will break the spring. Make sure NOT to wind it in the wrong direction or you will break the spring
- Back off the spool until the knot hole is aligned with the rope guide bushing on the outside of the recoil.
- Either use a C-clamp or a 2nd person to hold the pre-wound spool in place.
-Thread the new rope through the outer rope guide and into then through the knot hole in the spool.
-Tie ONE small knot in the rope and pull it HARD back into the knot hole until the knot seats in the knot hole.
-Release C-clamp or have 2nd person let go of the spool. The rope will rewind into the recoil assembly.
-reinstall recoil/air shroud on the engine.

That should get you mowing again.

Replaced starter rope on 5.5hp honda engine, can't seem to rewind it so it recoils when I pull start

Most of the rewind applications require you to pre load the recoil with a certain amount of turns before you wrap the rope on the pulley.

Broken starter cord on briggs and stratton quantum 40 roughly 1994 how to repair

Remove the recoil. Sometimes depending up on model this required complete air shroud removal. Remove the parts of the old rope. Remove the rope fro the rope handle. NOTE the knot in the handle. Brun both ends of the nylon rope with a match and pinch the burned end into as small of circumference as possible. Install new rope into the starter handle and tie the knot. Pull the new rope into the handle until it seats securely.

Prewind the recoil pulley as far as you can easily wind it. Back it off (unwind) just until the rope guide and pulley knot hole are aligned. Then either c-clamp it in place with the rope knot hole aligned with the rope guide hole or have a 2nd person hold it the pretensioned spring and pulley in position. Thread the rope through the rope guide and on into the pulley knot hole. (takes some effort to get it aligned and through the knot hole!) Pull the new rope through the knot hole and tie 1 knot. Pull starter rope and fit knot into pulley knot hole. Release pulley C-clamp or have helper let go of pulley. Rope should rewind into the recoil.

Reinstall recoil / air shroud. Happy mowing!

How do you replace the starter cord for lawn mower?

Hi and welcome to FixYa. I am Kelly

You will have to remove the recoil assy if it can be removed without the air shroud or the entire upper engine cover / air shroud with the recoil. This procedure should be performed by 2 people that at NOT distracted.

First you will have to have a replacement rope. Burn the end of the new rope your going to install into the spool and pinch it so that the end is smaller than the rope and pointed. Install the pull handle on the new rope and make sure there is a good single knot on the end of the rope that goes into the pull handle.

Next you will have to remove all pieces of the old starter rope.
Then you have to pre-wind the spring of the recoil so that if you were to allow it to turn it would turn in a direction that would pull the starter rope onto the recoil spool
NOTE: Once the pre-wind is done if anyone lets go of the spool it can DAMAGE the recoil spring When your prewinding... Turn the spool until snugs and does not want to move anymore. Then back off the spool until the rope KNOT hole is aligned with the recoil rope guide.
Thread the new rope through recoil rope guide and into the KNOT hole in the spool. (Ice pick scribe jewlers screwdriver... will be required to pull the new rope up and out through the knot hole. TIE a KNOT in the bitter end of the rope and pull the knot into the knot hole.
FINALLY have 2nd person release the spool and it will rewind onto the spool.
Install the recoil / air shroud.

Thanks for using FixYa.
