Hello,

your nuvi will receive its traffic updates through an FM channel that requires no subscriptions. The receiver is located in the 12v power cable so aslong as you are powered you should receive updates.

Hope this helps!

No access to free map or traffic updates. Plugged in traffic accessory that came with the unit, and it tells me that the accessory is not compatible with the unit. The serial number on the bottom of the...

If the Garmin Nuvi is sold with "life-time updates" for maps & traffic - updates are available for download at MyGarmin.com once they are available.

A "life-time update" is coupled to the serial number of the Garmin unit. If the serial number does not match the box with "life-time updates" on it - it could be the Garmin Nuvi came from another box without "life-time updates".

Without "life-time updates" - maps are available for free within 60 days after purchase. A "purchase" is registered by the Garmin device if it detects a certain speed or when it's registered at MyGarmin.com - meaning the 60 day countdown starts. Without a "life-time update" for traffic - a traffic subscription must be bought for a country & timeframe. (ie a year).

I just bought the garmin nuvi 265wt. I tried to activate the free lifetime traffic that comes with the unit but when I touched the screen to enable the traffic it told me I first must go to www.garmin/fm...

Check the information that came in your box. With my TomTom Lifetime Traffic and Maps, there was an "activation" number on one sheet of paper. I had to activate (per instructions) before I could enable the lifetime goodies.

Code to start traffic

You need to plug in your unit in the car with the Traffic cord, once there go to Tools and look for Traffic
press Traffic and it will now give you a code....

Have a cordless or cellphone handy in car with you when you make a call to activate Traffic

If you dont see a phone number to call there, there will be one on the www.MyGarmin.com website.

HOW DO I ACTIVATE THE TRAFFIC RECEIVER

firstly you will need to make sure that you have the latest software (run webupdater)
1) plug the traffic receiver into the GPS
2) plug the GPS into power
3) there will now be a new option available in your menu (traffic)
4) go to tools>settings>traffic
5) click on add subscription>next
6) there should now be a unit ID displayed on screen write it down
7) now plug your unit into your PC go to Http://www.garmap.co.za/traffic
8) click on the registration link, scroll down to the bottom of the page where you should find a link for activation
9) now you will need to enter your GPS serial number into the field followed by the Traffic receiver unit ID and the GTM serial number which should be found on the power cable of the GTM 25 and on the tag of the GTM 12.
10) you will then click next and be shown an activation/unlocking key, write that down and keep it safe.
11) now plug your GPS into a power source with the traffic receiver connected.
12) go to tools>settings>traffic click on add subscription>next and you should then be prompted to enter the unlocking key
do so and click done
13) your receiver is now unlocked and once you have got sattelite reception you should now have traffic reception

Those were pretty good instructions that Garmin gave you.

If you have your owner's manual, refer to how to get into your settings. If you don't have the owner's manual, you will have to google it. Unfortunately, you did not provide the model number, otherwise, I would have provided the link to it.

Traffic reciever not working with Nuvi 650

I have the Nuvi 650 (for about a year now) and just bought the GTM-20 traffic receiver. This receiver came with the "free lifetime" traffic service. (Keep in mind that at first use, the receiver is "mated" to the Nuvi for "life". You can't move it to another GPS).

In any case, the GTM-20 manual says you only need to plug the two together and the two units will establish their connection automatically.

Mine didn't work.

I called Garmin and after a LOOONG hold time, finally got through to a tech rep. She advised that I connect my 650 to my PC and login to Garmin to check for upgrades. She was right. When Garmin offered this "free service for life", they had to issue a new software update so the Nuvi would accept it. She also advised I check the offered "optional" upgrades as well, and look for any that offered "traffic" in the title. There was one of those upgrades, also. (almost everything else was optional "voices" downloads).

I downloaded both the primary software update and the optional traffic update to the 650. It installed them automatically. She also advised "just to be sure" to do a hard reset on the 650. That involves turning the unit off. Then, while pressing a finger in the lower right corner of the screen, turn the unit back on. The unit will ask if you really want to risk losing personal data.. Say "yes", and the unit will do a clean reboot with the upgrades.

Reconnect the receiver and the 650. It may take awhile for the units to acquire the satellites, traffic signals, and set the internal key, but it did work. You may not see the "traffic icon" at the first map screen. If you go to the tools or setup screen, you should see the traffic icon at the lower right of the screen. Press that, and if you are in a coverage area, it will show traffic in the area.

If you have the first version of the GTM-20, you will have a set of LEDs on the power plug that show power and traffic signal info. If you have the new version of the GTM-20, there are no lights on the plug.

A couple of side notes. If you have a lot of "favorites" saved in your 650, you may lose those on the hard reset. To avoid that, put your 650 on the PC, go to your file explorer, and go to the "Nuvi" drive. Click on that, and find the the folder and file called "gpx". Copy that to a folder or desktop on your PC. After you do the nuvi reboot, reconnect the PC and copy the file back into the folder on the 650. That will restore your favorites.

Also, make sure you are in a covered area. If you are not, it won't find the signal and will not show you any traffic icon.

The first time after the upgrade and reboot, the Garmin rep said it could take anything from several minutes up to nearly an hour for it to establish the link (mine was about 10 minutes). After that, it will come right on.

A lot of information here, but the first thing is to get the latest software upgrade for the 650. I had upgraded mine about 4 months ago, and it was already two versions out of date. The newer version had the fix for traffic. I would start there.
