does it read other disks? try a few difference DvD's. if other disks work, the disk you want to read is broken. if other disks do not work, your dvd player is broken and you should get a new one or contact JVC if it is still under warranty.
The noises that you are hearing will be the spindle motor trying to spin the DVD as the lifting presentation tray for the read/write head has not located, if the media is not spinning this will never be able to read the lead in on any DVD as it has not presented the disc in the correct place.
If is is out of guarantee then I suggest that you check to see if the DVD is spinning by removing the top cover with the power OFF then eject the tray and try to load the media a small touch of the DVD in the clockwise motion should cause the media to start spinning, this is for diagnosis only if this is the case then the spindle motor will need changing
you are probably running xp go to help and type in find new hardware sounds like somehow your drive got deleted in the hardware and device manager this will work with vista too unless the drive went bad naturally
Some dvd have a multiple laser function for dvd and use a single laser for cd. common fault on not reading dvd is dirt on laser or fault on multiple laser that cannot read dvd. If cleaning doesnt help only repair tech can fix. Just check that the dvd is working in another dvd player to ensure it is not disk
The disc cleaners that can be purchased are little more than brushes that can clean dust only. If you can gain access to the lens of each unit, try cleaning the lens carefully using a cotton swab and alcohol. That should resolve some of the problems. If not, then for some reason you have multiple failed optics assemblies.
First, make sure that you are using ONLY DVD-R discs. And the cheaper, the better. For some reason, the more expensive ''name brand" discs do not work as well. If that doesn't work, try cleaning the laser. But make that your last resort.
