Cannot get menu for A/V mode to shut off Closed Caption
2 nights ago our cable service (Comcast) went out for approx. 30 minutes (just lost service, did not have power outage). When service came back on, closed captioning appeared out of the blue. The "cc" button on the remote has no effect. TV is set for Y-CbCr yet when I access the menu and go to System, it looks like the system menu for PC Mode, not Audio/Video Mode (in other words, under the System section, I only have Signal Format, PIP Set, Advanced and System Reset ... I do NOT have any Closed Caption option). I have tried everything I can think of, including the System Reset (no difference), and calls to both Hitachi and Comcast have been nothing more than a total waste of time. Comcast claims it's nothing coming from their system signal, and Hitachi guy only had me keep pushing menu, unplug/wait/plug back in, push menu, ad nauseum. Then finally told me to take it to a service shop 50+ miles away.
As I stated in my original post of the problem, the "cc" doesn't do anything. While I appreciate the fact that you think it's a comcast issue, basically you're telling me I have to live with it.As I stated in my original post of the problem, the "cc" doesn't do anything. You're right, it is a Comcast related problem ... I accidentally stumbed upon a solution that was posted back on Jan. 29, 2008 by vinnienap (a user) and a solution by C E T posted on Feb. 03, 2008. Obviously, since I talked to Comcast twice about this issue and they claim it can't be them, well, they lie. Turning off the cable box, accessing that menu, and then turning off closed caption permanently, got rid of it. Another Expert here suggested my TV might be stuck in repair mode, but for the life of me, I can't find that message anywhere. As for the closed caption problem, you may want to search back for it and read it for future reference. You're right, it is a Comcast related problem ... Oops, I'm not too good at navigating this site yet ... bestdarngood, that earlier comment I posted about stumbling across a solution was meant for Ekse, not you ... so sorry, yes, obviously I did unplug, etc. Didn't make any difference, and since I believe there are no coincidences in life, I pretty much believed Comcast was responsible for this trouble.
Still trying to find the info "ginko" had posted (I think it was addressed to my issue) about the TV being stuck in repair mode. Tried to follow what I remembered of his advice, but that doesn't address the menu problem. The closed caption problem is corrected.Oops, I'm not too good at navigating this site yet ... bestdarngood, that earlier comment I posted about stumbling across a solution was meant for Ekse, not you ... so sorry, yes, obviously I did unplug, etc. Didn't make any difference, and since I believe there are no coincidences in life, I pretty much believed Comcast was responsible for this trouble.

If you disconnect the cable box and hook up a VCR directly to the tv and you are still having the problem, the problem has nothing to do with the cable company. Try accessing your other input buy using channel down. They are usually located just below channel 2. If this does not help get in touch with me and I will research this further for you. Hope you find this information helpful.... George
Ginko's Solution as I think you are having trouble seeing it as the website has been changed recently
"Try first disconnecting cable from tv and unplugging power cord from power for ten minutes
Comment by ginko, posted on Jul 24, 2008 The tv entered in service mode menu, do not change any settings as you can get further problems disconnect power and cable for ten minutes or so, then plug power, test tv with no cable, then restart with cable. If it does not clear chose the system reset, try first unplugging."

1) Start with the cable box turned on and TV on tuned to the cable box.
2) Press the POWER button for the cable box and then quickly press the MENU button.
3) This should bring up the user setting menu. Use the arrow keys on remote to go to Closed Caption and press right arrow button this should bring up the closed caption menu.
4) Press the OK button and this should either turn CC on or off.
5) Once Closed Caption is turned off press LEFT ARROW button to return to User Settings Menu.
6) Press the POWER button to turn the Cable box back on and the Closed Caption should be gone....
I dont know what model you have i see two on there website. i read manual for one of the 42 inch lcd tvs and i do see where you confirmed you said off to closed caption mode am i correct? Ok try this turn the closed caption on and exit menu. now shut off tv and turn it back on. now go into menu and turn closed caption mode to off now and exit menu and see if that helps. ok i hope this helps ....oh i forgot to mention make sure that you didnt enable the closed captioning on your cable box remote. Just might want to check with that. It might not be your tv at all it could be the cable boxes closed captioning service. I hope some of this helps if not see if there is a factory reset in the menu.
The problem was with the Motorfolla Comcast cable box not my T.V. . I turned off my Comcast cable box, pressed menu on the remote to the cable box. This made a 16:9 ratio appear on the cable box's LED read out, and a bluish screen appear on my television. One of the options on my television was to turn on and off closed captioning. Therfore, I turned off closed captioning and the problem was solved.
if the tv is not hd then the control is on your tv.
However if the comcast box is an hd box do the following;
Press cable, then power and then with 2 seconds press the red menu button to get the hidden hd user setup menu. You may have to hit the menu button multiple times to get the menu to stay up on the tv.
Next go down to closed captions which is probably enabled, and hit the left or right arrow key to change it to disabled.
Then press the power button twice to turn the box off and back on.
Dale
Go into the setup menu and turn off closed captioning there, or just restore the factory presets. I believe this model has a menu button on the front of the tv.
You didn't ask for it, but here's a link to the user manual, in case you need it.
I have a Sharp Aquos 46" and go a Comcast HD receiver as well, and had the same problem turning off the Closed Captioning. I order to turn it off you need to go into the box user setting by (starting w/ the cable box and tv on) pressing the power button for the cable box then the menu button for the cable box. This will open up the user settings menu. Just toggle CLOSED CAPTION to DISABLED.
This is what just worked for me. If I can figure this out, anyone can :) We have comcast cable hddvr box, motorola 3416, and a new Samsung HD Plasma, but try this no matter what you have...
turn your cable box off, and THEN press menu on the box. A white screen popped up and this is where I had to scroll down to and disable the captions. I couldn't believe this worked since I thought the cables were enabled on my TV since my captions were covering my cable menus, but it was the cable. I hope this helps.
As I stated in my original post of the problem, the "cc" doesn't do anything. While I appreciate the fact that you think it's a comcast issue, basically you're telling me I have to live with it.
