Hm. Not sure how much help I'll be, but I'll give it a shot.
- Make sure the device is charged for at least 6 hours if this is its first use. If it isn't, charge it for several hours anyway and try it again. Make sure the charger is plugged all the way into the outlet and all the way into the device (mine sticks out about an eighth of an inch, yours might too). - Call customer service at 866-204-4714 and describe the issue. I had something a little like this issue (I was stuck at "Literati" screen) and they said to drain the battery and recharge it fully to see if it made any difference, and that if it didn't work they'll be sending along a package to ship it back to them for a replacement. If nothing works, ship it back to them for a replacement.

How do you drain the battery if it won't turn on?

  • Anonymous Jun 14, 2011

If it doesn't turn on at all, I know of no way to drain the battery, and have never taken the time to dismantle it. However, when I still had mine I could get it to turn on by plugging it in, waiting a minute or two, and then attempting to turn it on. It would freeze at the boot screen, but at least it would be on. Then unplug and let it sit there, and it'll eventually drain the battery.

Just so you're aware, I didn't wind up sending mine in. I returned it at the store I got it from, dismissing it as a defective item, and got a white Pandigital Novel. I've been using it with excellent success ever since. That's my personal recommendation is to attempt to return it and try getting a different device of the same nature.

Can't sent back because Merc Group are crooks. it was under warranty still and they were going to send a box for shipping it to them. Early part of August is when this happend and I'm supposedly still waiting here in October. They repeatedly lied to me.
I finally took mine apart by placing a butter knife in between the two halves and slowly separated the halves.
I attacked this with the thought of nothing- gained nothing ventured- and was ready to throw out the unit. Something rectified the bad display and its been working ever since.
It may be dangerous for others to use a sharp instrument so I'm just saying that's what I did and it worked.

My literati is frozen

Ooh. My 2-year-old Literati did the same thing. Multiple attempts to reset (paperclip in the hole in the back) and to do a hard reset (regular reset + pressing and holding the power button) failed. It wouldn't even turn off; I let the battery run down and recharged through several cycles. No dice. Dead, dead, dead. I suggest that you try the resets, but I fear that your reader is just kaput and will need recycling [MerchSource allegedly will help with that: (800) 374-2744.] Scouring other chat threads didn't seem to yield any other options, but you can look here and maybe have better luck. Sorry.

Is there a battery you can replace on the literati ereader only had sinceDec..been charged but will not turn on..hit reset did nothing?please help spent alot of money on Kobo books.

MY e-reader would not turn on either. I charged it overnight and tried the reset. I called the company and he told me that it sounds like the battery and it cannot be replaced due to the fact it is sealed. My loss! I can recover the books I bought from Kobo though.

Literati is frozen on the first screen. Won't respond and none of the keys are responding. It WILL turn on and off however. It happened with the 1.9 update. What do we do now?

Hey julesjer, I have this issue as well. After exhausting my options, customer service is now sending out a package for me to return my Literati for a replacement. I was advised to drain the battery and recharge it fully to see if that makes any difference, which I'm in the process of doing right now. Hope either of these options may help.
I've copied and pasted this answer to other similar problem threads on this site regarding the Literati. The only other option I can think of is holding down the reset button (pinhole in the back) with a paperclip for at least a full minute, as per the recommendation by someone else' problem response on Fixya. Hope this helps in some way!

My literati won't turn on and I thought it may not be charged but when I charge it, the screen doesn't turn on still.

My Literati doesn't start. I tried to rest it, but nothing happened. I plug it in the power for more than an hour and tried again to reset it, but a gain no sign of life in it. Any suggestions.

My ereader. Won't turn on or charge

Try using the reset button on the back of the device. It is a little pinhole. I just used my earring, gently poked it in the hole and voila, it came back on!

My literati ereader wont turn on

Just called customer service and got a fix. Plug in the recharger and insert a needle into the reset hole, hold it for ten seconds, release. Wait until you get to the main screen to make sure everthing is all right. My unit was not recharging even though it was plugged in. So I'll be going to the store of purchase for a replacement.
