The dvd player won't work. Tried the memorex opti cleanser & that played through the steps. Also it will play cds, but just says loading & no disk when try to play a dvd.

The dvd laser is probably faulty. The CD laser is still working. The complete laser unit will need to be replaced.

Not every CD or DVD player is able to correctly ready every single brand of writable media. The situation you described is quite common, and the only solution is to use another brand of media. Some people recommend burning at a slower speed, but I don't think this helps at all.
This situation might be caused by incompatibility between the laser on your player and the formulation of the writable surface. You should test other brands and find one that works with all your devices. When you find it, stick with it.

Have you tried burning a CD in the new drive? Because the drive is a DVD it will always be recognised as a DVD, but should work perfectly well with CDs both playing and recording.
