Download either a Hiren's Boot CD (version 15.2), or a free version of Parted Magic (either or both on a CD instead of a flash drive ... because flash drives can EASILY be infected by malware and viruses! Set your BIOS so that the machine will not try to boot to the hard drive, but only to the CD. Then access your files via the OS on the CD, and copy whatever you need to copy off to another location.

When the problem is lines/pixalization or whole areas Black or discolored it is generally the LCD T.A.B.(Tape-Automated Bonding) technology is no longer transferring data. So to make a long story short your LCD is going. But it could last for years before any further problems arise. If it is that annoying replace it.
SOURCE: Laptop won't boot (display problems)
If the diagnostics displays on the LCD screen but you get no display when Windows starts to load, it sounds like you have a video software driver problem. Try tapping the F8 key when you power on your laptop and boot in Safe mode. If it works in safe mode then you need to check you driver. You can also try connecting the laptop to an eternal monitor and see what happens.

Do a search on ebay for a motherboard. As long as your hard drive is ok you won't lose any files.

If you are having issues with a backlight I would check the lcd inverter first. It is usually 20 dollars on ebay. I would avoid contacting dell as they are no help to people that are out of warranty.
