Step 1: Find out which generation your iPhone is by looking at this link http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3939
Step 2: Download the correct generation with the most up-to-date number, the higher the number, the more up-to-date it is. Example: A 3GS iPhone, that would be the most up-to-date would be iPhone 3GS (4.2.1/8C148a). The 3GS tells it that it is the iPhone 3GS. The part I have put in bold, is the update number, the higher that number is, the more recent it is.
Step 3: Go into iTunes, with your iPhone plugged in, go to the left side of the screen, scroll down and select your iPod.
Step 4: The right side of your screen should now show the general iPhone information. Scroll down the screen on the right side until you see a button that says "Restore". Hold down the SHIFT KEY on your keyboard and click "Restore" on your screen. This will pop up a menu.
Step 5: From that menu, choose the update you just downloaded and hit OK. Your iPhone will now be restored. After a few minutes, you will be greeted with a welcome screen to re-sync your iPhone.
This is the only method that seems to work.
