Use an external speaker and see if the problem still exists . If the external works then check the wires to the internal speaker . If neither work you may need to find someone that knows what they are doing and have them check it for you.

Hi, I have a Cobra 2000GTL Taiwan made PC board number pc497ab The set has been stored for a while (couple of years) and I just received it,I switched it on and (with antenna connected ,SWR 1.2) and the...

It would be very hard to diagnose the problem from just the informations listed. My experience is a radio that has been sitting will have problems with the electrolytic capacitors drying out and throwing the receive tuning way off. The capacitors are the small metal can looking devices on the board. There are a lot of them. The top of them should be flat. If one is rounded on the top it is often times bad. Of course it could be a transistor in the receiver chain. Just one bad one will stop everything. It could also be a bad solder joint. You can try pushing gently on different places on the board with something non-metalic like the body of a plastic ink pen. Flex the board slighty and see if you get a change in sound or you can hear other stations. If so, you have the delicate process of tracking down the bad joint and repairing it. Just lightly using a solder pencil to remelt joints will often solve this type problem. If you can't find it then it will take a technician with the proper equipment to track it down. Good luck.

Cobra 19 DX IV out of frequency

I would definitely take it back for a re check. If the radio took a good bump perhaps it can cause it to drift off frequency. Turning the channel while holding his mic keyed does nothing but just throws a dead carrier. No value what soever. RF Gain is just to improve his reception by either lowering or raising the sensitivity of the receiver of the radio. Squelch is to silence the hissing sound you hear when no one is talking. Care must be taken to not to adjust too much or you wont hear anybody. It wont help his transmit audio at all. Recommend you get another Radio Check from someone else. He could be pulling your leg saying you don't sound good. Best regards and hope this helps some......................John.

I can hear people talking, but they can't hear me, or they say I sound like an alien

Check to see if the meter needle is swinging backwards when you key up. If it does your final may be bad. If the needle goes forward and others say they see your keying up but no sound your audio chip may be bad; especially if you have tried so many mics and antennas. If your radio has a swr warning light and it comes on this could extremely limit your range and others may not hear you and contiued use will damage your radio. Good luck!!!

Cobra 2000gtl no sound comeing out but will talk on am and ssb can you help

Because you have transmit, more than likely your audio section is OK as much of it is shared with the receive side. A final test of the audio section is to check out the PA function. If it works most of the audio section has been tested.

The signals for the meter movement and receiver sound are developed in the audio detector circuit (diodes D21 and D22) just past the I.F. stages (Transistors TR16, TR17, and TR18). I have seen these diodes fail. They are frail little guys, but are inexpensive. I would recommend replacing them first. Pay particuliar attention to which way the band on the diode is positioned and limit your soldering time. If that does'nt rectify the problem, (no pun intended) you can look at the transitors.
By the way, MOVE that second test radio farther away or you could overload the front end of your Cobra creating even more problems. Good Luck, 302

Cobra 2000GTL

Hello wood butcher,

This sounds like a capacitor is not discharging fast enough and has enough residual voltage stored to continue to power the display (to a point). I would check the capacitors that are connected to the vcc of the display matrix and also check to see if one of the resistors has not increased in value due to a possible thermal event.

Tell me how this works out,
Thank you,
